Healthy Eyes

Hey all you creative bits.

Eye Strain. I'm sure we've all experienced it. How do you guys keep your eyes healthy after staring at computer screens for literally days. Ive just gotten a job as the lead designer at a shop and I'm not used to the amount of time in front on the glowing box. Before the job, doing freelance, i could take breaks whenever I wanted to reduce the eye strain.

I can physically notice my eyes becoming blurrier and foresee myself purchasing new lenses every 6 months.

So how do you guys deal with this?

I already have glasses, and as it is now once every two to three years I need new lens. What bothers me though is that after a few hours of sitting in front the PC, my eyes get very dry and irritated, then they start watering. I usually find a good nights sleep helps but then after a few more hours of computer work it comes back. So I'm curious, when working full time, anyone have any pointers?

I work full-time usually in front of the monitor 8-12 hours a day depending how bad the work load is.

When I feel my eyes getting dry and/or itchy I usually go wash my face, making sure that I completely saturate my eyes, I might have to do this twice a day but it really helps.
Since I already wear glasses I don't really know if it's due to work or health issues that my eyes are getting worse.

yahh washing the face seems to help a lot. but it seems theres not a single way we can protect our eyes from getting worse. I may sound very picky or something, but my eyes are very valuable, especially in this profession. Do you think putting the monitor further distance away from the face helps?

I've been reading up on this and many sites/blogs say moving the monitor away and making the display larger will help, they also say if you do wear glasses you can get a special prescription for glasses specifically designed for computer work (I have no idea how expensive those would be)

On top of that they say to look at something more than 20 ft away to give your eye muscles a rest. they also suggest getting a non-glare screen filter or get a non-glare coating on your glasses. Most say the best thing you could is get up and walk away and do something else for a few minutes. I think though it would be different for everyone.

Washing My Face involves getting up walking to the restroom, chit chatting with coworkers on the way, looking down a long hallway,... so I guess washing my face is only part of making my eyes feel better lol

They say to look out a window and make your eyes focus on something far away for a bit every hour. Don't just look away from the screen at the wall, that's not enough.

what you were doing before is a good approach, and you should continue to do that now in your new job. force yourself to take breaks. don't call coworkers or email them, get up from your desk and walk over to them. get up and stretch your legs every hour or two. take a real lunch break away from your desk.

It's that simple. Get up out of your chair and go for a quick walk around the office. Use the time to deliver a message to someone instead of emailing or calling them if they're right down the hall.

We're talking about a minute or two of your time every hour. If anyone has a problem with it, they can take it up with human resources - I'm sure a lawyer would love to speak with a company that doesn't allow their employees to get out of their chair at all. ;)
