Help w/healthcare services trifold

Would like some help with this trifold. At my wits end trying to incorporate diversity (must use at least 6 free photos from sxc.hu), happiness and helpfulness with limited text.

Couple notes: Largest font on the page is company's logo font--tried using a sans serif w/Garamond body, but was shot down as "too cold."

Thought I'd get your advice on interior before posting exterior. Thanks in advance.

The placement of everything seems random....Looks like it is not based on a grid....there is no flow, the whitespace is random and not working. The brochure does not convey anything to me and is not very cohesive. The possibilities are endless doing a brochure, but this one looks like it was done in MS word or something. I would suggest finding an interesting grid, and starting over, and being more aware of the white space and text. On the left your text is flush, and on the right it is ragged...

I don't really understand grids or how to apply them. If you have any suggestions I'm all ears.

is this a school project? if so, i'm surprised a professor would assign a brochure design before teaching the grid system.

a couple of web sites about using grids:
http://www.thegridsystem.org/
http://www.markboulton.co.uk/journal/comments/five_simple_steps_to_designing_grid_systems_part_1/

i agree that it's kind of bland overall and a little random. the images don't say "health care." while they might say "healthy person" to some extent, they really don't feel like they add much of anything.

you really need to sit down and work on concepting here. you have a bunch of elements on a page, but you don't really have even a "style" or "theme" in mind. it's just that: the elements. with a couple of colors and that dotted stroke on the images.

take some time to look for inspiration. look for well-designed brochures. if you can't find them online or in your daily life, hit up a good bookstore, go to the design section, and look for design books that have examples in them. try to figure out why the ones that appeal to you are designed well. dissect them and figure out what makes their designs work and learn from them.

Hi Catherine,

You can't live without grids. They're the basic building block of layout. A grid is basically the horizontal and vertical guidelines that determine how your content relates to each other, forming columns and rows off of which to build your layout. Grids can be very simple, or very complex. You might not realise it, but you've used a 3 column grid in this layout, and although not perfectly implemented, it does exist, as JHouse pointed out.

The best place to learn about grids is here: http://www.thegridsystem.org/

Thanks so much for your help. I've been researching grids all morning and looking at successful designs--hopefully I can implement those ideas.
