Help with printing business cards—not aligning correctly

I created the card for my dad and to be printed on a inkjet from a PDF exported from InDesign. It's being printed on Avery 27871™ 10-up business card paper.

If you look at the attached image, you can see that it's NOT aligning to the paper correctly. I very carefully made sure I got all the measurements right. I used the dimensions written on the package and also measured the physical paper with a Typographers ruler, as well as digitally measured a scan of the paper, AND double checked my InDesign document. All the measurements check out, everything is PERFECT. Except when printed, it's not! :grr:

This has me stumped even more because the top row is perfect. Going down the page, however, it gets progressively more and more off. How can this be? I don't understand it and it's driving me crazy.

(BTW, I'm printing on a Canon i860, same model my parents have)

(BTW again, the attached image is a scan of the Avery paper with my PDF aligned on top of it, it looks exactly like how it prints though. I darkened the scan so you could see the lines better.)

Probably the printer isn't printing correctly. Measure how many much each one is off and make the artwork bigger to compensate for the priters mistake.

That's a possibility I considered... an annoying one.

That would be really hard to pull off but it IS one thing I could do.

I think I found the problem in a measuring detail I hadn't considered. The page is NOT in fact 51p0 x 66p0 (8.5" x 11"), but is more like 66p9 tall. I was depending too much on inDesign's page margins, which were in fact off for the paper in this case.

Some custom tweaking has made it work!

this should have been posted as a stand-alone forum entry.

what is the main difference in mac and pc?
mac:
* is often more expensive than pc, also upgrades seem to be more expensive.
* it often looks better, stylish
* the inside components are carefully chosen. so you dont have a lot of custom upgrade choices. this makes the mac more stable in some cases
* the mac os x is based on unix/linux
* you dont have so many games and apps for mac as you do for windows based PCs. but you have at least one killer app for everything you need to do.
* virus and spyware attacks are rarely found on macs.
* macs are friendlier, easier to use. interface is pleasing on the eye and things are placed for good usability. but this also makes them less transparent when it comes to deep core settings.

PCs
* often cheaper, depending on the configuration
* for the same amount of money, you could build a faster PC.
* a lot of choices when it comes to different components and upgrades. but this could also lead to compatibility problems.
* a huge amount of games and apps.
* require constant software maintenance. that is you need to learn how to keep your system clean, virus free. also you need to learn safe practises.
or you'll end up re-installing your system often or worse, losing work.
* you could install linux and windows on the same machine.
* windows is not so friendly if you dont know it very well. often beginners are confused regarding simple issues.
* there are a lot more users having PCs, then macs. so, depending on your location/community you could get help easier.
* having a PC is often like having a racing car that u can tune up in your garage then take it out for a spin. its both bad and good, depending on what are you willing to do.

if you're willing to have a smooth, stylish and expensive cruise, go for mac.
if you're willing to tune up things, change oil, stress the components to their maximum in order to have a high performance custom ride, go for PC.

why we are using mac for designing?

both PCs and macs are used for designing.
you actually have the same essential applications for both of them.
generally you can open the same graphic files on both mac and pc.

although macs tend to be favourite.
thats because

1. photoshop was initially built for mac. then, a bit later, it was ported to pc.
that gives it a psychologically headstart. also, older guys that are teaching now, started on macs, so the student learns whatever teacher know how to use.

2. in the first years, macs were a lot closer to print process than PCs. for years
there werent good applications that could output stuff for printing on PCs. but that was a long time ago. now, its the same.

3. macs are design savvy. so designers tend to appreciate that. designers are more aware of usability issues, so they choose macs.

4. macs look cooler. they are trendier. again, designers appreciate that.

5. more often, mac ads and new apps target designers or support creativity.

how to print in illustrator?
like in any other program.
you might want to check up lynda.com for some movie tutorials on the best designer applications. also buy an illustrator book. it helps to learn stuff in an organized matter rather than on the fly.
subscribe to a design magazine such as computerarts.
and stick around this forum.
