helvetica fonts in 10.5.4
pokie (1198 pencils) | Mon, 2008-08-04 21:24Preface: just got a new macpro a couple of weeks ago. On the old computer, I had no problems.
Now, I'm having some serious font conflicts every time I try to load a helvetica. There are a ton of helvetica fonts in my system library (okay, 4) and I've read I cannot get rid of them. I'm using fontexplorer. Sometimes I get a conflict error, sometimes nothing happens, my check mark just never shows up.
I'm going to go find an old computer now to open this file and save as outlines... :(
If you have a solution, it would be greatly appreciated.

It always alerts me during start up and it drives me crazy! I am also using v10.5.4, and I noticed it didn't happen until I upgraded a few months ago.
I am using an Intel iMac if that makes any difference, and I am also using FontExplorer.
Things that make you go hmmmmmm......???

I NEED these helveticas!!!! LOL

Have FE clean out the system folder of fonts. You don't want any more than the required ones in there.
Use Tools/Clean System Fonts folder to do so.
Make sure all your fonts Added to Library are stored in a folder right inside your hard drive, not in any system/fonts or library fonts/folders. Don't touch any Microsoft fonts. Those need to stay put.

When you store them in areas your computer recognizes and requires (system fonts) then it loads everything from those locations.
Unless you want your computer to load your fonts all the time, keep fonts out of library and system fonts folders. Make a folder called FONTS or whatever you prefer, and put it right inside your hard drive, not in any other folder. Then "Add to Library" in FE.
You then have full control over your fonts rather than wasting your system resources to do so.

I have a separate folder called MY FONTS. For that specific reason. I was just curious.

Right, I save my fonts with the job and activate them from the job folder (on the server) so it's definitely not that. I'll try doing the system font cache thing and restarting my computer if I ever get some spare time to do it!
Unfortunately, Leopard forces you to use Apple's version of the Helvetica font. You can't disable it, you can't move it, you can't throw it away. If you try, Leopard simply re-creates it.
No font manager will work around this problem. Your only solution is to use the OpenType version of Helvetica - generally called HelveticaSTD. The OpenType version will not conflict with the system version.

Yeah, I just did the font cache thing and it didn't work. :(
I'll see if I can find the std version (lol)...
