HNS DVD Box Art (finished project)
Tadams (61 pencils) | Sun, 2007-12-30 21:01Here is the DVD box art that the previous posted DVD's came inside. Again this is a finished project, but still welcome critiques and suggestions.
I've also uploaded a flat full version with the printing guides so you can see all sides of the box design.
Thanks in advance.

Ah, good ol 10.75 x 7.1875 with live area, dielines and bleeds... I know these well. :)
The black is good, but it doesn't add much excitement to the cover. Why no other colors in the background or any sort of 'vibration'/'tension' in the design? The photos of the fighters are a bit drab too; why aren't they a bit more exited/energetic/angry, etc.? and the lighting seems a bit 'digital camera with no lights' to me.
Your design work is consistent throughout the series, so congrats on that. You'd be surprised how many designs in the dvd world get this wrong.
I worked in the dvd packaging realm 2004-2007 and saw more of these than I care to mention. :) Some were WWE dvds...
Not this one, but a good example of the market:

I totally agree. The pictures of the fighters "stink" in my opinion. I was left with some very poor quality, non-professional shots and had to make the most of them. I did my best to at least try and make the skin tones match (you should have seen the originals) so that the 3 of them looked relatively similar.
I had no say/take on the photos, I was just given a couple of each fighter that they wanted to appear on the cover and these were the best I could come up with, with much color correction of course.
Working with poor quality photos is always fun.
You might want to consider removing the wedding ring. (Just looks out of place) Also, the scale on the guys head in the middle seems a touch too large in comparison to the other fighters.
Note: I took a look at your skin tones on the cover and they have way too much yellow. A 3-C, 40-M and 74-Y mix makes them look really jaundice. Try going into selective color (Yellow) and moving Cyan +100, Magenta -25% and Yellow -100%. For most prepress work you'll want to be more in the range of 5-C, 38-M and 43-Y.
I had this same thought. :)
Understand the pics are crap, but that's all I've ever had to work with in the dvd industry. That's why, as in the WWE sample I posted, you have to get real creative with the background. :)

I agree with the posts above - and even if you get crappy photos to work with, you still need to do what you can to make them presentable. :) These people look more flabby than muscular or tough - I would adjust the levels on their bodies so the contrast in their muscles is better defined. Another good thing to do is burn the outlines so they don't look pasted onto the background.
I could be wrong, but it seems like the light source is inconsistent. (ie. the front man's left fist shadow, and his right elbow shadow.)
It may just be me, but for something like this, I would want a more "down and dirty" feel - I would probably add some grain and add some colour overlays. I've never created anything in this genre, but if I did, my first thoughts would be similar to the effects in "300". :) Perhaps lame, but true.
Thanks for sharing!
