it's important to have some sort of understanding and/or education with graphic design and art. Whether or not you have the time or finances to go back to school to study graphic design, there are still many avenues you can take to study it on your own.
For instance, I would HIGHLY recommend you research art and everything that encompasses this (i.e. architecture, industrial design, interior design, fine art, etc.). Believe it or not, until you have an understanding of the history of art (or graphic design, for that matter), you won't be successful in your executions.
Next, try and either purchase or gather from the library, books on typography. It is imperative that you learn and KNOW typography and its elements before you can even attempt to start your designing. Unfortunately, too many people out there call themselves "designers" (and I use this term loosely) because they're proficient in Photoshop and/or Illustrator. You will soon learn that this does NOT make a designer, nor a successful one.
I know this sounds overwhelming, but since you asked, that's my recommendation. I would like to believe that most designers in their field will agree with me on this one.
Then, purchase a sketchbook and start sketching!!! Good luck.

I used to sketch and paint in my younger days. . . draw comic books and had a grand ol time of it. . . now. . . well. . .:P
Its like what Homer Simpson said. . .'I used to rock out all night and all day, then it was every other day, now. . . i'm lucky I get a chance to get funky!'

I understand exactly what you're talking about. Unfortunately, I am in the same boat right now. A lot of it has to do with having a 7 year old daughter who is heavily active in sports & school, but basically it seems I rarely have time to paint or anything else—which I love. It's frustrating! Even reading a book these days has become a chore. Sigh!
Hang in there and keep plugging away.
