How can I "cut" a shape from a vector in PS?
Josh (152 pencils) | Thu, 2005-07-28 15:10Hi everyone.
I am creating a logo for one of my sites in Photoshop (would be doing the vectors in Illustrator, but I don't have it).

The shark fin and tail are two seperate vectors, and each one consists of 2 layers:
A black solid fin shape, then a duplicate of that shape in white that has been transformed smaller to give the illusion that the black is just an line.
I'd like to not have to do this, so that the white space inside the fin/tail would actually be transparent (it currently is solid white).
Is there a way I can subtract the white vector shape from the solid black vector?
I know I can subtract using the pen tool, and the shape tool, but what about from one layer to another?
Any help is much appreciated!

Fairly easy to do but it took me a while to figure out and can be a bit counter intuitve. Open the white fin layer and select all the points in the vector shape. Copy it.
Click on the black fin layer path window. Switch to the custom shape tool in the toolbar. This will switch the options bar at the top of the window to include a a pathfinder option. Paste the path from the white layer. Switch the pathfinder option to subtract and it should knock out the shape.

Wow...that is pretty counter intuitive...would have never thought of that.
Thanks again, that was a BIG help!
