How do I create my own personal icon next to my URL from my website?
onegirlcreative (1090 pencils) | Mon, 2007-02-26 18:47Hello Designers!
I would like to know how I create my own icon (instead of the generic Mac/world icon) to appear next to my URL whenever my website is visited?
I see that there is one even on creativebits.com. Cool!
I'm sure it's something that's very basic, but I have NO idea how to do that.
Thanks!
Suzanne

Make a gif file and change the filename to favicon.ico and load it into the first level of your website directory. Should appear to the left of the URL in your browser window.
This will work as long as you have ftp access to the root level of your .mac account; not just a web interface to what .mac wants you to see...
I have my icon on my website, flikworld.com...

It'll need to be visible 1t 16x16 pixels so it's best to design it as such from scratch rather than trying to downscale a larger image to that size.

Ya, but what do you mean by load into your web directory. Do you mean, Copy and Paste or what?
Copy your favicon.ico to your web server, the same place where your index.html (or php) file is, and add this piece of code in the head of your page:

I created my website in Dreamweaver. I do have ftp access through my domain and from my server.

the nice people at chami.com offer an online way to make your favicon. Just upload your logo or icon & seconds later you have your favicon & the code:

You don't need any code to use a favicon for a website unless your server doesn't pick up .ico images.

From what software can you save an image as an .ico file?
my portfolio @ eideltime.com
1. Create a gif file at 16px x 16px
2. Change file name to favicon.ico
3. Place file in 1st level of the website directory, the same level that reads your first index.html page
You can use any program that can create or export a gif file. Illustrator or Photoshop are two good ones.

you can also find a photoshop plug-in to make it easier to open/save *.ico files:

I haven't had a chance to try any of the above suggestions, yet but I appreciate the response. Thank you.

Here http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/ you can find a FREE plugin for Photoshop with which to export ICO format files, including the new Windows Vista PNG ico files.
There is also a small little piece of html you can add in your html to help IE recognize that little image:
‹link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.mydomain.com/favicon.ico"›
