how do you choose?

Working for a company for almost three years, I have been given 10% share at this company, I work really hard always giving my best, but I never get to realy create my own work, firstly there is not enough time during the day and secondly its not that line of work where you can create. I really need to get some more designing experience and at this company I don't but it pays the bills. Do I go look for another Job that is just a job to get more experience as I can't afford to pay for more studies.I enjoy my job but I am not getting anywhere as far as designing is concerened. Please can somebody help me put some light on the subject.

It may be time to move on.

Think about it: If you are doing more production work than designing, you won't be ultimately happy, because you aren't doing what you do. And therefore not living up to your full potential. Therefore you won't be happy, nor have the incentive to do your best work.

I'd just talk to the boss and tell him/her your concerns. If they are worth their salt and value you an an employee, they will understand and try to be accommodating.

If not, it may be time to make a move.

Good luck with that one.

terry gave some good advice.

also remember that it's easier to scrape by earlier in life than later in life, so if you're going to make a move that may be a little tighter financially, it's better now than 5 years from now. i can't take the same kinds of chances today that i could 10-15 years ago, too much risk.

and if you're not growing creatively, you're not building the experience for the higher paying job down the road.

If I had this advice 4-5 years ago I would have moved! But now with a family and more responsibilities its a LOT harder. G's right, the RISK goes up exponentially as time goes on.

But then ALL moves involves risk. ;)

I do like to stay a bit more "mobile" than most. :)

I was going to reply with the same answer. When you're younger, you can get away with switching jobs. The older you get, the more bills you have, the more it will impact other things.

Try different jobs now.

If your 10% share entitles you to that percentage of the profits, just be a silent partner, go get a new job and add your 10% share to your paycheck! Definitely don't stay doing something you don't like if you don't have to.

If they value you as an employee they would listen.

I wish you luck. Remember do what you like and like what you do!
