How many Macs do YOU own?
onegirlcreative (1095 points) | Mon, 2007-12-31 23:50Just for fun on this New Year's Eve, I was thinking about a friend of mine who works in IT. Obviously, he owns PC's, or should I say—A single PC at home. I found this shocking since he works in IT. I thought IT-people were as insane as designers were about their Macs—WE had to have more than one.
Therefore, it came to me—why not ask the designers at CreativeBits just to see if my theory proved true.
NOTE: Can you tell I'm currently unemployed??? =P
I currently have 4 Macs in my home—soon-to-be 5 since we will be purchasing the new 24" iMac next Saturday. But for now, these are the systems that I currently own (and are currently functioning):
1. eMac 700 MHz (pathetic, I know—hence the upcoming purchase of the new iMac)
2. iBook 14" G4 1.2 GHz
3. iMac G3 300 MHz (currently in my daughter's room, however, she will be "inheriting" the eMac)
4. iBook G3 Clamshell 366 MHz—I just can't seem to give this guy up! I love its design.
That's it.
Nothing fancy, obviously, but I LOVE all of them equally! Once my daughter inherits the eMac, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with her G3 iMac. I don't have the heart to get rid of it because I love its classic design.
Okay. Now share your systems with the rest of us. I hope I'm not being geeky here.
Cheers 2008!
Suzanne

emac... not sure what kind, it's blue. The 3 year old used it until he trashed some system file or something and killed it. We may bring it back to life when he's older... LOL
iBook G4 1ghz (3 years old-- this one I use)
Powermac G4 (5 years old-- this was our server, but now we have dotmac so it only gets turned on when we need to print)
imac (maybe a year old - 24" intel core 2 duo whatever, 2.16ghz)
Obviously I do not know much about the hardware. My husband takes care of that stuff.
You'll love the intel imac. We have this program, I think its' called VMFusion or something, that lets you run windows simultaneously with OSX. It's not really needed, but handy when you want to watch a netflix movie or whatever you may need stupid windows for (we really only use it for netflix movies)... you don't have to reboot! I like the remote control. Ours doubles as a second TV. :)
I'm anxious to get it. I'm literally counting down the days. My husband says I'm like a child marking off my calendar. What can I say, I'm a Mac geek! LOL
As far as your "blue" eMac, it must be a G3 iMac, because the eMacs were only made in white, and they're G4s. So that's what I'm assuming you have just from what you said about it being blue.
Either way, it's obvious we love our Macs! :)

Let us know when you get it Suzanne, as would be interested to know what it's like and stuff... sorry had a few drinks, but yes basically is it as good as the hype suggests.
I cannot wait! I'll be like a kid on Christmas Eve waiting for "Santa." That'll be me when we walk into the Apple store!!!
I promise, I will let you all know what I think of its performance. It'll probably take me all weekend to install apps, fonts, etc. So be patient with me! =P

I dtiched the ugly beige g3 333ghz, but still have a:
grey g4
powermac g5 dual 1.8 ghz
We also have a white g4 ibook in the house
I hope to get a new 24" imac, probably the 2.4ghz but can i justify it? Anyone know how the new imac compares to my old g5 speed wise or where I could find some comparative tests? I hope its ok to post this question here as a one off.
Before I left my job, (or before I got laid off, actually)—they purchased two brand new 24" iMacs, 2.4 GHz for the other two designers (maybe that's why they eliminated my position, to pay for their computers—LOL), and they ran very well.
They were so cool. That's what I'm getting this Saturday. The exact same one. I figure it's worth the extra $500 for the 24" screen, because after seeing theirs, it was so nice to have all of that "real estate" for your palettes, tools, work, etc. Mine right now is only 17" and I was just going to do the 20" iMac, but after seeing that, I couldn't stop foaming at the mouth! =P

Mac Performance In The Raw - Wow! The Intel iMac Is Almost As Fast As The Quad Core Power Mac - How Macworld Pulled A "Not So Fast" One...
Macworld Lab’s tests do show that the new Intel-based iMac is faster than the iMac G5 when running native applications. However, we found that those improvements are generally much less than what Apple claims is a 2x improvement in speed...
Of course if you're running apps that are Universal and also take advantage of the Quad Core chipset, you're going to smoke any G5 out there. Unfortunately, still many apps aren't yet taking advantage of the Quad Core chipset.

Great links thanks. It's interesting seeing the progress of the Intel chips. Around 50% faster is certainly good, although still not sure if I should upgrade, heart says yes, head says maybe....
You bet! Hey, just watch out for Adobe products in Leopard. There are issues with CS3 (and 2 and 1) in Leopard. Just search for 'CS3' in the search bar above for more.
Some here, though, report they've had no issues. Personally, I'd wait till the NEXT op system comes out before jumping into Leopard full bore. Let everyone else work out the bugs and you won't interrupt your workflow. :)

Started out on a SE/30
Moved to a IIsi
Then a Performa 3260 (I think) that worked up until recently when we had no software to run on it. . . seriously!
I Bought a G4 400 mhz and had that until recently when the motherboard gave up the spirit 6 months or so ago.
I then upgraded to a Dual MDD 867 (I think) THAT I sold and bought an iMac 17 inch flat panel G5 1.8 ghz which is what I am using now to type this.
The wife needed a research machine for school, so we went up to NY and visited the 5th Avenue Applestore and I bought a 15" Macbook with 1.8ghz. Nice store great service and rock solid computer!
I plan to buy a MacBook pro and and external monitor by the end of the year, but first I need to buy another external HD for my backups.

I'm so mad I sold my SE/30. :) Then I went to a 7200/90 (upgraded to a dual 180 chip) with 512 RAM. It was a frankenstein, but it worked for me till about 2003 (bought it in 1996!)

I have a little museum.
There is still a Classic in the house, a Cube and for some reason an ugly FX...
Sometimes I just give them a little live to start them and afterwards I m so happy that I have also some new machines and I appreciate the speed computers have nowadays.
My newer machines
- an IMac lime
- a Powermac G4 2X450 mghz (transparant egg screen) used as a layout machine running CS2
- 2 Ibooks (1 with an external fire wire disk) as an Itunes audio player, one for teaching classes
- Newly a MacBook pro 17' as my main computer.
Neat list
- 2 X Ibooks G4
G4 Dual 1.25 Ghz (Firewire 800, I believe it was known as)
G5 Dual 1.8 Ghz (my main machine.... I love her)
I would love to get an Apple laptop of some sort, but my lottery numbers just won't seem to come up. Oh well.
Oh, and a PC that hasn't been turned on in two years. Just haven't thrown it away yet.
I love macs, but I don't need more than one in my home to be efficient. I HAVE owned others and upgraded slowly over the years, but each time I upgraded to a newer model, I got rid of the old either by donating it or selling it. One machine is all I need.
I've had: Performa 6116CD, then upraged to the blue tower G3, then upgraded to my current G4 PowerBook. A G5 tower would be lovely... and at this point, I'm actually thinking I MIGHT keep my PowerBook if I get a tower - it'll be good to have a travel-friendly laptop should I need it. But buying a tower is not at the top of my home priority list. Freelance work at home is a very SMALL part of my income, so the need for a powerful Mac just isn't extreme.
For PC, my husband has a PC laptop, so if ever I need to get on a PC, I just hijack his.
I have twin G5 imacs, well, paternal twins anyway, one runs Leopard, the other runs Tiger until im completely positive nothing else will go wrong!

We ARE all Mac geeks!!! LOL
I love it! That's why I posted this thread. I thought it would be interesting to see what kind of systems we were all using.
To respond to an earlier thread—I sold my old Lime Clamshell iBook G3 several years ago to buy my new iBook G4, but I always regretted it. Not because of functionality, of course, but I always thought that the design was timeless! It's so cool.
So I purchased my Indigo clamshell on eBay about a year ago and I love it. Granted, we only use it for internet because it's too slow for anything else, but I love it. I love the handle! To quote Aiden from Sex & the City: "It's like a purse." I love that!!!
Thanks guys for participating!

I have 4 working mac, and 2 that I just can't toss yet. (6 total)
I have a mac mini for my office manager, a PowerBook G3 and PowerBook G4 for my wife and I, and a blueberry iMac for the kids (which is collecting dust since the Wii). I have an old "pizza box" PowerPC 7500/100 in the attic, which was my first mac, and is yet too sentimental to toss. Finally I have an graphite G3 Tower which I want to turn unto a server, but like a lot of things, is on the back burner.
I drive my office manager crazy (a former PC drone) because I give names all the machines and drives. (i.e. Pippen, Moya, Hal, Titan, etc.) I guess I never got the memo that machines had to be numbered or coded. This might explain the reason it's hard to let them go. Kinda like you should never name your livestock. ( hand me another "Bessy"burger, yum! )
Think Different
matt
I'm so used to the "Corporate culture" that I forgot that I COULD name my Macs cool names! Lol we used to do that here at the office until IT moved in and started naming all the machines weird letter number combinations that no one can remember. . .lol

We had 2 computer labs in the Communication Arts Dept. when I was in college. In one lab, all the Macs were named after Star Trek ships: Enterprise, Reliant, etc.
The other lab they were from Star Wars: X-Wing, Tie-Fighter, Tidirium, etc.
(The above was when System 7.5 was brand new.)
I have 2 Macs at home: a 24" white C2D iMac (awesome machine... my favorite Mac I've ever used!), and an old 550 MHz Titanium PowerBook that stays on my wife's scrapbooking table and only gets used when one of us needs to check email or the weather or something while the iMac is in use by the other (or my son).
Does anyone here use the thing where you can talk to your mac to get it to do stuff.... I tried for awhile but it didn't pick up half the time...
It depends what mac you have. You might need an external mic or something, but I agree I never got it to work properly either.
I have, spaced over two houses...
*a mac plus
* an mac se 40gb with *two* 800k disk drives
* a colour classic
*an apple lc something thingy (picked it up at the tip, can't remember the exact name, it was aaround the early/mid 90's when apple was naming computers with numbers and initials and in other un-memorable ways.
*A performa 5260
*2 imacs, one blue, one red (though I have a feeling I donated one to my mum's school, can't remember if it's in storage or at school)
a mac mini g4 (used purely as a htpc)
and a black macbook which I am typing on right now.
There is also a aqua clamshell ibook , a 15 inch white ibook, another black macbook, and a graphite g4 tower living in my house.
my next buy will probably be an intel mini to use as an updated htpc that can handle hd video... if I can afford it.
Lets see, we got:
PowerBook G4 15" Ti
PowerBook G4 17'' 1.33Ghz, 2Gb RAM
PowerMac G5 Dual 2Ghz, 3Gb RAM
MacBook Pro 17" 2.33Ghz Intel 2 Core Duo, 3Gb RAM
iPhone
iPods (1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 4th Gen, 80Gb Classic, Shuffle)
AppleTV
Dont get me started on the Apple/Adobe/Corel software....*sigh*...
MacPro, MacBook Pro 15" and an old iBook G3 (white model)

I started on a Apple IIe and a IIGS =) The way Apple treated IIGS users (ie. really poorly) turned me off on Apple products for over 10 years. I also have a homemade PC running Windows XP and Ubuntu and a old 1GHz Dell Notebook (that I replaced with the Macbook). I'm not sure what I can do with the Dell - I may give it to my kids to play web games.
Just thought I would ask as I haven't but know a few that have and think it was the right thing to do. It's not long until we get some proper applications in February, so I think I will wait, although I am tempted. Plus so many web apps and I haven't found a problem with lack of wi-fi where I am.

I feel the EXACT same way about my Clamshell. It's slower than molassis, but I love it! That's pretty much our internet computer for upstairs. But now that I am not working, my husband has been spoiled using my G4 iBook the past few days—I used to bring it to work with me everyday, and sometimes I just left it there, so he never used it. Just used the clamshell.
Oh well. I'm sure once he sees that 24" iMac, he'll want to use that one, too. But I won't let him....LOL

BTW, the 17" iMac (sunflower iMac) was the best desktop ever built from a design perspective. I love that I can move the monitor all around without changing where the "guts" are. When I buy a replacement iMac for it, I'm going to move the G4 into my kitchen and attach a touch screen so my wife can use it as a kitchen computer and store recipes on it.
That is a really good idea, drewpc. I wish I had a big enough kitchen to do that, because my daughter currently has the indigo G3 iMac in her room, but when we get the iMac tomorrow, I am going to give her my eMac. I don't know if I'll have the heart to sell her old one now. I think it's so cool. I'll probably put it in storage for now.

Suzanne,
shouldn't you wait till MacWorld Conference on the 15th before buying a new computer. The iMac is recent but you never know what Apple is going to release.
It is truly fantastic!!! What speed on this thing. OMG. I'm salivating just talking about it. I couldn't wait to get it out of the box and get started. After a day and a half of installing programs, etc. I can truly say that it's flawless.
And the screen? Don't even get me started on the screen. I got the 24" screen because I wanted to go bigger, much bigger. I used my old eMac as a host computer and this one as a target disk computer while transferring files like my iTunes library and fonts, and seeing them side-by-side was quite humorous. It was miniature compared to this thing! It was spectacular.
So far, I really love Leopard. It's really cool.
So to add to my original post, I now have 5 computers. =P

Lets face it eventually a Mac fails and you have to add another to the stable.
MacPro Dual Quad Core
Macintosh G4 Dual
Powerbook G3 Wallstreet (Mostly runs Yellow Dog Linux)
Though it is my last one with a SCSI port. I have a SCSI peripheral or two left.
Gave away my SE30 before moving to California.
My home setup is much faster than my Workstation at the office.
My first was a Mac 512. About 15 years ago I got rid of the guts and turned it into an aquarium. My betta "Passion" spent many a happy hour swimming around in there as I watched him through what used to be the screen. I kept the case because the inside was engraved with the signatures of the original Mac development team: Jobs, Woz and about 30+ others.
Over the years I've had just about every gen. Currently I own the Cyan blue iMac, the 17" flat screen gumdrop iMac (G4;; 800 MHz) and the 17" G4 aluminum Powerbook. I just ordered a 20" new iMac.
My wife has one... count 'em, one PC.

I never sold my old macs, they are always used by someone else in the family.
Today I have (most of them in my parent's garage in Rome):
Macintosh LC
PowerMacintosh 6100
Performa 6300
PowerMacintosh 7200
Powerbook 145
Pismo
Clamshell iBook (tangerine)
Newton 120
Newton 130
Powermac G4 733
eMac
Powerbook G4 17" (current machine)
Macintosh Classic (just bought it here in UK for xmas)
I no longer have the origina SE...
The ones that are still used daily are the pismo, G4 tower, powerbook, emac.
you can see some of the stuff (on a very old post of mine) here:

where have you been, plugz?
I'm not currently working in design, I got offered a job as an analyst/consultant and have been working in southern Spain and the Canary Islands for the past few months.
I'm living out of hotels most of the time and my net access is via a USB 3G modem on my mobile phone network. Trouble with that is in hilly spain if I end up in a valley I get no decent reception and have no access to the net. :o(
I'll be back soon though, I'm heading back to the UK in May or June.
Hope you're all well here.
I am sure you'll come back a better person or something!!!!!!
512k Mac (at the bottom of a closet)
PowerBook G3 (WallStreet)
PowerBook G4 (the first 12")
iMac (Intel Core Duo)
It's really handy keeping that WallStreet around just to have a computer that still boots up in OS 9 yet is small enough to stash anywhere.
Between my wife and I we've got:
PowerMac (dual 23" monitors)
17" iMac
17" Powerbook
iPod Photo
2 iPod shuffles
iPhone
I also have a pc of some sort... Not sure what kind, but its a lap top and its black. I use it to test sites on IE6 and 7.
~
17" iMac G4
15" MacBook Pro
iPod Shuffle and 1st gen nano
And if Macworld brings us new Mac Minis and Cinema Displays I'll be having some of that, if not I'll have to settle for the current ones.
Would have bought an iMac if not for the glossy screen, what were you thinking Steve?!
