How Much Should I be Charging?
MSiekfen (5 pencils) | Thu, 2009-09-10 20:28I know that this is a common question, but I'm raising it again. I recently moved to a much larger market (from rural Virginia to Orlando) and I'm working on adjusting my charge scale.
I do marketing flyers for a high-end real estate company, including e-mail invites for open houses, etc. I also do photoshop work for them, like color correction and removing security company signs from the lawn - nothing huge.
My issue is with templates. I should point out that I'm employed by this company in a diffrent position and am doing the marketing on the side.
They have asked me to create templates for flyers, invitations and a listing presentation for them to have available for agents to use. I don't mind doing this, however if the agents have templates available, then my services are somewhat unneeded.
:) So basically I'm asking how much I should charge to put myself out of buisness.. if you want to boil it down... I have an hourly rate for the time it takes, but I feel as if I should be charging a flat rate on top of that because it is a re-useable template. Help!

Charge like 50-100% extra. See if they pay.
Real Estate companies wanting templates is nothing new. If you want to be proactive, design a workflow and let them know the work required. One of them is going to be doing your work - don't think they want to waste time with graphics when they could be out there conducting business.
Use your business skills to convince them they are making a mistake. I'd imagine they think they can just put your templates in Word and be sweet? Ha. Good luck taking THAT file to a printer, ha.
Anyway, instead of helping them take you out of business, let them know the error of their ways. They don't want to start printing their own signs too, do they?
