Most all applications, including Adobe's, open documents in the latest version on your computer. So if you have a CS2 file on your computer, it should open CS3 when you double click it. Now it's possible that the prebindings weren't updated when you installed CS3, so you need to do a "Get Info" (Command + i) on an InDesign file, then in the "Open With" section of the Info box, select InDesign CS3 from the drop down menu and hit "Apply All."
Do you have CS2 and CS3 installed?

tell me how to do in pc
Right click and open with.
The article talks more about resetting the pc so it looks for CS3 instead of CS2:
"On Windows XP After installation, navigate to the Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Shell folder and double click the Register64BitIcons.bat file to update the document icons.
Windows Vista
Open a command shell with Administrator Privileges by right clicking the cmd.exe application and choosing to Run As Administrator. Navigate to the Program Files (x86)\Common\Adobe\Shell folder. Type the name of the .bat file, " Register64BitIcons.bat" (without quotations) and press Enter."

i need to open indesign 2 in cs3
Follow the instructions I posted, or create an indesign exchange file (INX format) and open it that way.

don't double click on the document just open ID-CS3 in you comp and select the files and open...
or just give the extension i.e. .eps here press give .INDD

Hello,
I have the same problem, I'm unable to open InDesign CS2 files with InDesgin CS3. While loading the file, the application closes unexpectedly, without showing any warning or error. It just disappears.
I never had the CS2 version installed on this computer (I formatted before installing CS3), so no garbage can have been left from a previous install. I tried installing and uninstalling CS3, remove it's preferences folders... but still the same problem. I also saved the InDesign's CS2 files in inx format, but no change. My OS is Windows XP.
Any idea how to solve it? Because I don't know what to do anymore :( .
Thanks!

But my problem is that I want to open CS2 documents in InDesign CS3, not CS3 in CS2.
If you have a font manager, turn it off. There's a possibility that a corrupt font is causing the problem.

The problem doesn't seem to be due to corrupt fonts. But thank you for helping.
Taking a look at Windows' log, I can see that \Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3\AGM.dll makes an access infraction (c0000005). I also found out that if I save the file in inx format, open it as XML in the notepad and delete "crec" XML elements (< crec ... > < / crec >) I am able to open the file. It's a jerry-ringed solution (I introduced some corruption in the inx file), but at least now I can open the file :p .
I told you to do the INX format before! Ha ha. :)

But saving just as inx didn't work as well, InDesign CS3 crashed too. I had to delete code from inside the file, which means that now the structure of the inx isn't correct :( . If someone who has the same problem finds a better solution, please please post it. Thank you!
After weeks, of trying to open old inDesign docs that were newly described as "exec," I was able to open 15 year old inDesign docs with CS4 by simply typing in the extension .indd (the one they use for CS4. CS2 and CS3 may be different. Adobe keeps changing) at the end of the file name. Then open from within the program using the file>open>yourfile
p.s. Adobe was exceedingly NOT helpful, despite the fact that I have purched every single version of indesign. Even when I reinstalled old software to see if it would open, the original serial number was rejected. Their answer was I should have upgraded every file each time I got a new version. Can't wait to get started with Apple's iWork Pages.
eh? CS2, CS3, and CS4 all have the same extension, INDD (as did CS1, not sure about 1.5 and 2.0). there has never been an "exec" extension or an extension that a PC would recognize as an executable file.
if you had different extensions in your file names, someone was renaming the files with different extensions. don't blame that on adobe.
Step 1: Buy a Mac.
Oooh art - you are naughty. But I like you.

I know, I know, buy a Mac. Not an option in this low budget facility. Plus, we have no IT personnel.
We are having the same problem. Cannot open CS2 documents in our CS3. Our OS is Windows XP. Our files extensions have: .INDD; Our shell folder doesn't have an "Register64BitIcons.bat file" in it, it has an "aiicon.dll" & "idicon.dll"; The font manager is turned off. RBKJ is correct in saying that Adobe is not very helpful. And I don't have a clue what "INX" is. Can someone out there ****** help me!!!!
inx is an indesign exchange file. it was specifically created to be able to save for an earlier version of indesign. so you could export as INX from CS2 and be able to open that file in CS. or export an INX from CS3 to open in CS or CS2.
did you install CS2, then install CS3, then afterward uninstall CS2? that could have messed up registering what program should open INDD files. you might want to try reinstalling CS3 if that's the case.
We are dealing with 2 different computers in our office, which were hand-me-downs from our mother company, which unfortunately is 50 miles away. Plus the two computers share a drive that we keep all of our customer files on. I don't have a clue what has been installed onto our computers. We don't have access to the program files. But we will look into it. I'm not giving up on this one. Thanks for the info!
