How to open .sitx extension files on a Mac?
Ivan | Fri, 2007-04-13 15:58I have a couple of files with .sitx extension. They show up as a compressed file that supposed to be opened with Stuffit Expander, but every time I try any of such files I get an error message:
An error has occured while expanding the file "filename.sitx" (This is an unsupported archive version).
Error #17543
Anybody has a solution how to open this archive? Thanks!

Try just deleting the "x" from the file name.

I tried and no luck! :(
Aw, rats! That has worked for me sometimes, and for people I to whom send .sitx files that they can't open. I guess you'll need Stuffit Deluxe.
Or you could forward your file(s) to me, let me expand them and send them back. If they're super-huge, we can use YouSendIt.

Second thought. Are you using Stuffit Expander? It used to be freeware. Not sure if it is now. But if you have it, you should check the box for Automatically expand archives in (and then you pull down to chose a destination). That might make a difference.

Let's try this one and see if you can open it. I have Stuffit Expander.

Done. I need your addy to send you back the opened files. E-mail me with that off-list? I know it's night-time in Bahrain right now, so I'll check for a message from you tomorrow morning.

Thanks! Tell me how you did it!
You have an old version of Stuffit Expander that doesn't support .sitx (StuffIt's new compression method). You need to have version 10 or later.
Or, you can use UnArchiver, which is free, to decompress virtually any compressed file out there.

Thanks a lot for the tip!
From wikipedia: Allume Systems offers free downloads of StuffIt Expander for Mac and Windows, which expands (uncompresses) files compressed using the StuffIt and StuffIt X format, as well as many other compressed, encoded, encrypted and segmented formats. The shareware application DropStuff permits the compressing of files into the StuffIt X format.

I sent you the decompressed files one at a time via YouSendIt using the eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%63%72%65%61%74%69%76%65%62%69%74%73%40%67%6d%61%69%6c%2e%63%6f%6d%22%3e%63%72%65%61%74%69%76%65%62%69%74%73%40%67%6d%61%69%6c%2e%63%6f%6d%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b')) public addy. You should get the links to download them at your end.
FYI, I use Stuffit 10, which comes with Expander 11.3 . If you have this, I don't know why you should be having trouble. Maybe some virus protection software of yours didn't like one of the files? Or maybe another decompression app took priority and rejected the .sitx suffix? Great minds want to know...

I got it, thanks!
If you used Sendspace.com you could load those files to one place all at once. Of course you'd have to send them .sit, not .sitx. :)

I was wondering if you could help me? I am trying to open QuickTime 7.6 Updater and iTunes 9.1.1 for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. When I try to open QuickTime I get this message:
There is a problem with the expansion destination. The destination folder /Volumes/QuickTime for Tiger 7.6 Updater is on a locked volume. Please select another destination.
When I try to open iTunes I get this message: There is a problem with the expansion destination. The destination folder /Volumes/iTunes 9.1. is on a locked volume. Please select another destination.
I have error "17530" on stuffit apparently. Can you help me with this because I have no idea what this means.
the other day my powerbook's hard disk died. I had a new one installed. On the web site where I follow a sailboat race and before the old disk collapsed could simply open and see the videos of the event now when i try to play a video appears the writing "Cannot open the file. Verify that the path and filename are correct and try again." how do I verify... or more better: How do I make the computer play the video???
Please register and open a new topic. Provide more info as well. Thanks!

Skip the BS and just get the expansion utility. This should take care of what you need.
