I actually have an interview!

I gave up looking for a job at the beginning of this year... but some dude hung on to my resume from December. I go next week. I am pretty sure the job is mostly illustration (which happens to be my self-proclaimed forte), so I'm going to get my portfolio together as good as I can. Plus, maybe get some extra stuff done to add in there in the mean time.

Can you think of any cool things I can draw in the meantime? I'm thinking I could do some fruits or something... that's the only idea I've come up with so far. I can't remember all that I have in my portfolio (made with illustrator), but I know I have several figure drawings, Dorothy from wizard of oz (LOL-- it's supposed to be an ad for kansas) as well screenshots of websites and graphic design stuff.

I also have these on my computer that I can/will print: Car illustration, Caricatures (with or without the picture I was going by), illustration I made of my family (self, husband, kid, and dog) for christmas, and I could put some of my photo retouching stuff in there.

I don't know, what do you guys think? I may not put the Christmas one on there... wouldn't want to give anyone an excuse to not hire me cause I have a kid. :P That reminds me, maybe I should take out the layout for my kid's website... since I had it in there during my last two interviews, notice how I didn't get hired. :P

I don't care if I get the job or not really... I figure whatever happens, happens. Money is always nice though.

Surely it isn't the subject that matters? Just the execution & concept (which might not be as important with Illy's as it is with design)

I would suggest a mock project, maybe something to do with music, so you can really let rip with your imagination and show you Illy skills at their best.

You said you are going to get your portfolio together as good as you can? Why just as good as you can? Surely you time is more wisely spent making the presentation as crisp as possible so it is seemless?

Also it might be better to spend time organising yourself and brushing up on your graphics knowledge. (recent designers, type, any changes in the design world and most importantly the company.)

Anyway I wish you all the best Pokie, please keep us informed of any developments.

p.s. Maybe using some of your photography skills to add another section to your folio, as you have been on a course... :p ;) (only joshing ya)

You gonna get it for sure! Do some background checking on your future employer. Try to find out what he likes. If he's into horses do a horse drawing, if he's into music do an iTunes like colorful piece. The hidden agenda is important.

If you feel a site you show may not give a professional image from you, take it out. Your kid means a lot to you, but your employer may not appreciate it. It may look like you have nothing else to show. It's better to show less stuff than show more, but lesser average quality.

Offer to do a test job. Tell them you're sure you will be the right person to do the job and you want to prove it. Don't worry to overpromise, we'll help you if you get stuck!

See, if you think this thread may or may not endanger your chances. If you think so, we should take it off line. Many do google background checking nawadays.

Don't have much to say, but just want to wish you good luck. You'll get the job, no doubt. I've also applied for a summer job at a print shop nearby looking for a graphic design student to do work over summer. Learn all about printing, and do a few client pieces to build portfolio.

For mock projects, how about making a figure (illustration) for a campaign (something to do with food and drink or whatever), and set him on different medias showing your illustrative and design skills maybe? I don't know, but good luck!

Good luck! I'd love to see some of your illustrations. I know that there are people that specifically illustrate fruit for a living so I was curious to see what yours are like.

Thanks guys. I really don't care if I get it or not. :P ... I've got other plans anyways. ;)

I don't know what I'm going to draw. From my understanding, they put illustrations on like plastic cups and stuff. Like, company logos or for special events. I knew a guy that had worked for them once and am looking in his online portfolio again to refresh my memory on what kind of stuff he did for them.

If they don't hire you because you have a kid then that's discrimination. I believe that having a child denotes a responsible person, but you obviously don't have to get into it in the interview since it's about what you bring to the company, not your family. :)

Also, keep it simple. I don't think any employer really cares about spec or personal/comp work so much as what you've reall done and how you've been able to increase the bottom line of any company you've done work for.

Bring samples relevant to the client, and maybe three more that show your other experience that might relate. I find clients get overwhelmed with too much information, and they're just trying to see if they can work with you in the interview. It's all about personality. :)

Just my two cents. Good luck on the interview!

I just thought I'd update this and let you guys know that pending a physical, I got the job! I am very excited. I doubt I would have gotten it if I hadn't had a former professor as a reference. It turns out that he actually worked there for awhile and he gave me his "highest recommendation"! So, I'm super excited.

Congrats!

I was checking the art/media/design jobs today. There are 28 jobs posted this week in Denver. In January when I was really needing employment, there were 4 a week...

Is there a trend of graphics jobs opening up in the summer? Or is it that us creative folk tend to leave town when the weather is good?

I just read your thread and that is interesting. When I was looking this past winter in Denver I too noticed a defnitie lack of creative job openings. Most of the places I would get in touch with would tell me they had literally received hundreds of resumes within 2 days. So I have to ask, do you know of any specialized design job engines for denver other than RMIUG? Or, were you just searching through hotjobs, Monster and the like?

(If you don't mind sharing that is)
