I am independent and awesome *clock-related update*
mrcoupon (349 pencils) | Mon, 2011-06-27 18:07I've accomplished more in 32 years than most people have in 34. I don't post for your benefit. You may look upon my portfolio. I will hear what you have to say as long as it agrees with my own opinion. I don't need your validation, even if it looks like I'm fishing for it. If you post something I don't like I'm deleting the entire thread.
PS: any negative critiques of my website will be treated as personal attacks. How dare you generalize my genius?
PS2: I once bagged groceries for Walmart, one of the BIGGEST COMPANIES IN THE WORLD.

You know, I came on here with the intention to tell you this post was ridiculous. Yeah the kids' a bit arrogant and full of himself, but who wasn't at that age?
Then I realized he *did* in fact delete his post.
*facepalm*

I just want to say thank you guys for the advice you have offered me, I will be making appropriate revisions and will be resubmitting my website for critique later this week.
Until then, get off my balls.

Can't speak for everyone else of course, but don't bother coming back dude. It'll just get worse.

I was under the impression that this forum holds grudges, but I'm a bit surprised that you're the one giving me the preverbal boot.
You seemed to be the least apprehensive of the bunch.

Oh no, I'm just telling you if this stuff gets under your skin, hold on to your hat. You can't tell people to get off your balls till you come back in the hopes of getting a fair critique.
One thing I can tell you about the CB forums, you needs to arm yourself with an extremely open mind, a voracious sense of humour and thick skin. Check your egos at the door. Just like in the real design world. The comments made by Art and Monsieur Coupon are tame compared to some of the stuff said by the folks here, including myself.
Also, by deleting your thread, you pretty much proved some of what Monsieur Coupon was saying.

Yep, designers are a stuck up grumpy bunch, but that is even more rampant here.
While the advice can be absolutely gold, you have to completely shrug off the inevitable insults that will come, on every piece, no matter how good you ever get.
And just pray that these grumpy douches don't cross the line and arbitrarily decide you are a shitbag who steals his design.
I deleted the thread for these reasons:
Any sense of the thread returning to a point in which it was a constructive tool had been eliminated.
I had let me temper show on more then a few posts, which I apologize for but is understandable considering the bombardment I received.
I have taken all of the critique into consideration, and I'm working towards a better website. I'm young, hard headed, and obviously opinionated, but as designers aren't we all?
I can roll with the punch's, but what's the point of me going back and forth bickering? That is all the thread had turned into.

"Any sense of the thread returning to a point in which it was a constructive tool had been eliminated."
As designers we're ALWAYS going off on tangeants, it's only natural it should happen here.
"I had let me temper show on more then a few posts, which I apologize for but is understandable considering the bombardment I received."
Yeah, it was getting a little heated, but like I said, a thick skin will just come with time. If you think this is bad, wait till you get comments like this from clients.
"I have taken all of the critique into consideration, and I'm working towards a better website. I'm young, hard headed, and obviously opinionated, but as designers aren't we all?"
All the more reason to come in with a cool head.

indepeddant yes ausum no
For some reason I actually thought this was true.
Perhaps because people HAVE done it.
Up to the Walmart part. That just broke it, and made me laugh.
UPDATE I'M NOT DONE:
Why should I have to change my website around just because you people don't like it? Are you trying to criticize me on a critique site??? All of you might have years or decades of design experience, but your opinions don't matter as much as normal people who love my clocks.
You are not allowed to say anything demeaning towards me. Just because there's a giant fruity unicorn in my art section doesn't mean I'm not serious. My clock design skills are beyond your comprehension. That brings in tons of business every day, look at this recent example:
Client: "We're not sure if you possess the high end corporate branding experience we need."
WhyWait: "Look at this clock."
Client: "Oh god that's incredible. Here's one million dollars in cash."
When clients decide to commission a web site, they don't look for an artist who can create a delightful palette. Neither do they want a coder who will program custom web apps. Nor a SEO expert to get on Google. What they need is a promise to have their website up in 24 hours, no matter how shoddy and rushed it might be. Sweet clock logos are just icing on the cake.
If you dare allege that my site has a passing resemblance to a wordpress theme, be prepared to face the consequences. There's a cease and desist letter already on the way, Person-on-the-internet-whose-name-and-address-I-dont-know. I WILL SUE YOUR ASS INTO THE GROUND AND BURN THE REMAINS.
Seriously, I'd watch it around this kid. He knows the law.

That just reminded me of Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The episode where frank buys the foreclosed home and trying to kick the occupants out, and Charlie tries to play the role of lawyer.
God I love that show.

I'm sad that he deleted his crit before I could see it. I take it this was sparked by my clock comment in the morning?
Story update anyone?
Ivan man, you need to change the privileges given on the site to users and their posts. If they want to close it, fine- if they want to delete it, the thing should be moderated/ voted on. I'm tired of critiquing work for it only to be deleted and I not read the responses of the users. I'd like to know if I'm helping people or not.
Didn't like that wgzn was bad mouthing his site, implying that it was plagiarized, threatened to send a cease and desist letter to him for slander and yadda yadda. I called him an idiot and offered my address so he can send me one too, cause I basically told him the same thing. Honestly, his site looked like a template, and compared to the first mess he presented, it did look like something someone else created.
It was just told to him in a more diplomatic way. Kinda.

+1. There have to be SOME rules...
>> Cookie cut the chaos >>
Clock guy is still up for me. Am I (not) missing something?
its his second version (another post) that he pulled down.
and for the record i NEVER accused him of plagiarizing anything. i just said it was hard to believe that the same design mind that developed the first pile of dog shit also did the monumentally improved second version a day later. and thus i assumed he'd just populated a wordpress theme. WHICH i assumed based on some of the verbiage in his site was one of his service offerings... go fig?
it was funny. kind of on the level of the legendary printdesignerca
Thanks for clarifying.
I thought the part about his dad being a copy writer was kind of interesting - that copy wouldn't pass muster at any place I've ever been.
yeah. i thought the writing was almost as bad as the design...
but maybe the communication expectations where they live (institution) are different from the rest of ours...
"There's a cease and desist letter already on the way, Person-on-the-internet-whose-name-and-address-I-dont-know. I WILL SUE YOUR ASS INTO THE GROUND AND BURN THE REMAINS."
love that.
Don't you have to be committing a crime to receive one legitimately? XD
Apparently wgzn was commiting a crime, a crime that people go to jail for.

No, that doesn't even make sense. If you couldn't send a cease and desist until after a court case had decided fault, what would be the point?
I'm still trying to figure out what point you're trying to make.

hey www. you do realize that customizing wordpress themes is actually a service you mentioned on your page design in question right?
i was "accusing" you of doing something that you ADVERTISE as one of your services.
i am now CEASING to give a shit about this conversation.
and i will DESIST making further comments.
Cease and desist can easily be sent electronically. If you state pure falsities with no evidence as facts about another individual or organization, you shouldn't be so surprised to a less than friendly reaction.
I'm thinking of another less than friendly reaction for you.
Hint: A middle finger is involved.

Well I will say one thing, there are definitely obnoxious people who post despite unwillingness to take any critique. However I find the vast majority of the people who post critique are actually quite open.
What's actually going on is that the people giving the critique are the stuck-up ones, they cannot accept the fact that every single thing they say will not be taken as pure gold.
The method of offering critique on this site tends to be offensive, demeaning, of absurdly high standards, and oftentimes completely lacking anything constructive. Even if it may be extremely good advice a lot of the time, it comes off as just plain rude. There is no way around that, the bulk of designers are total dicks when they critique. That's just a fact I've observed quite clearly, after viewing tons and tons of people being critiqued on various sites.
Bottom line is, it is a pretty fair expectation that people will not react well to this type of treatment, regardless of their attitude going in.
...aaaaaaaaaaaaaand you're back why again?

Not trying to attack you bud but maybe your perception of a designer whose a dick is skewed if apparently most of us are? A lot of us are short on time and get to the point without coating things into web safe sugar plums wrapped in velvet. More to the point, when someone on the web asks for our free time to help them improve, it does upset some when the advice isn't taken. You're free to post critique but don't expect everyone to give it to you in a manner you feel you need/ deserve when free advice is free.
did you even read what I said?
I give up...
