i know a super newbie question
mrjain (61 points) | Mon, 2004-11-01 19:09Ivan, i took your advice on testing dynamlic sites on my apple and enabled all the stuff you said. However, where the hell is the index.htm page for the default apache install when i type in localhost in my browser. i tried for hours and was ready to throw my f!@$# machine out the window. I thought it was in " Sites" in my personal folder but to no avail.

oh my God! why didn't you ask for help earlier! :) that's what we're here for man!
it's not in your sites folder, this is where you will find the index file:
Library /Webserver /Documents/
to load it you should type this in your browser:
http://localhost/
you can also have another website under your username /sites folder as you asked earlier, but the access will be this:
http://localhost/~yourusername/
the sign before yourusername is like a horizontal wave, not sure what it's called. on my keyboard it's left to the "Z" with shift.
jeez, i could have saved 2 hours and hours of frustration by just speaking up earlier. anywho thanks, you rock.

It's generally refered to as tilde, although sometimes (apparently) as "sqiggle" (sic). Dive into mark has a history of the tilde.
i could have REALLY saved myself the anguish had I read Ivan's post completely the first time, it says right there in the blog entry where the hell the files reside.

On some keyboards it is next to the "1" key as well.

By the way, in case you were wondering or even care, tilde is pronounced "till-duh". Just FYI!
