Icon for a mac app named Stanza
kevin9794 (136 pencils) | Tue, 2011-04-19 18:14Hello creativebits!
Well, im developing a small app called Stanza, which will be a utility to display the lyrics for your currently playing iTunes song. The app is almost done, so I decided to work on the icon.
As you can see, the background is textured as a vinyl disk, and the S is in a color that stands out. Any comments, suggestions, questions please let me know!
Which one do you prefer?
BTW: there is also an option 7,

but it reminds me more than I'd like to admit of Shazam... what do you think?

first I think there's no vinyl without a center hole.
yes I'm brazilian xD
the color is... "ok sometimes hype" but sometimes boring.
if it's my project I'll hire an app icon specialysts like iconfactory or other app icon gurus.
yes I'm brazilian xD
haha the comment about the hole... the same I've gotten from everyone whose seen this. Ill put it and se how it goes.
This is more like a hobby ill release as a free app, so I don't really have the resources to hire an icon specialist, but thank you a lot for your comments!
hole is just what you need he he
yes I'm brazilian xD
I think it's nice! The grooves are very well done. Perhaps consider enhancing them? Yes, the hole and (perhaps) a circle label in center would be a nice addition. I like option 7 best.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Just to let you know, you should think of a new name. There is an app already called Stanza. I have it on my iPod Touch. It is a reading app, much like iBooks or Classics or even Kindle.
Hmmm... I wasn't expecting that!
Its a mac app and as of now I have no plans on making an iOS alternative, but indeed it might be better to change my name... anyways thank you for your feedback!
I might as well just change it to strophe, or strofa, or stanza in some other language and keep the icon haha.
I knew Stanza too but I was thinking you're a owner of that, this is why I tell you search for icon gods.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Out of the 7 I like the top left one. I feel it is unique and most definitely stands out. Since you did not mention what the app would actually do I am going to tell you what I THINK it does based on the looks of the icon.
I feel the icon represents classic Rock-n-Roll. The vinyl and color bring me back to the 50s with Elvis Presley.
If this is what you were going for 5 stars, if not - I would re-think color!
The name Stanza says time & control to me. I am curious what you may change the name too!?!?
Hope my input helps.

5 or 7, if you're going with this design, imho. But play around with the center hole...
Regarding the name - you're best off doing something involving the word 'lyrics', since that's what your app does... it sounds cool by the way. I am constantly looking up lyrics and would find an app like this very enjoyable!
From success to failure is one step. From failure to success is a long road.
7 with the hole.
Thanks all of you for your feedback. Im working on making the hole, and playing around with a label as well. About the name I've thought on calling it "Verse", and been playing with some designs for the V, or "Strophe" or "Strofa", which is Stanza in French/German, and keeping design 1 or 7.
@Liorah: This app will display the lyrics that you have on iTunes already, and will allow you to edit them and add some if there is none. I have done another app which will automatically search for the lyrics and allow you to copy them with one click, but after doing some research it seems to be illegal to do apps that will copy lyrics.... you know, "Copyright infringements." (I think its ridiculous too, but I don't wanna get sued :P).
So this is why I'm developing this other one. It doesn't automatically copy the lyrics from the web, but it allows you to display them and edit them easily (without the hassle of opening iTunes, going to the song, Cmd+I, etc.). You'll have to look the lyrics on your browser though. Sorry!
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but I feel if you would make the "s" slightly transparent so that you could see the grooves in it, it would look better.
hmm... sounds interesting. Maybe changing the blend mode in photoshop would work too. Ill try it, thanks!
