Illustration (work in progress)

This is an illustration I'm working on using a photo supplied by my client.

It is for a 12 page booklet that is sent out to students after they get accepted to my clients school. There is no type or anything, the brief was basically "we need a cool, colourful, funky image that will appeal to 18-24 y/os, both male and female"

as you can probably tell, this one was pretty much left entirely up to me. I *think* I am done, but I kind-of feel like it is missing something...any help guys? or should I leave it as it. The heading that will be underneath it is "Planning for Success".

The pic of the student is wrong.
I don't know why, I can't quite put my finger on it.
It looks like the kind of really awful stereotypical school publication pictures and although that's what it's supposed to be, they always look like they're made by adults who don't really know the students they're aiming at.
I hope that makes sense??

I'm also not convinced about the colours in the star bursts, it looks a bit washed out to me and isn't helping the image of the student look interesting as they're washing out the colours.

I would do the following:

Lose the traces and and dust trails above the stars, they're not working too well.

Lift the brightness of the background picture and change the colour, perhaps a more yellow or pink would work, but whatever the colour it took me three attempts of looking at it to even click that it was a library aisle.

The illustration overall is ok, perhaps a little generic but it could work if you make the colours a little punchier on the stars and I would lose the blobs that land in front of the student pic as they look washed out and dirty.

Overall it's ok, I'm struggling to find things to say about it good or bad, it's just ok.

I think your heading in the right direction! i agree with the picture of the girl being strange.. she does not look like she is happy... i mean she just got into the school why is she looking down at a book with her eyes half shut and a smug look on her face? haha she needs to look excited. but if thats what the school wants... go for it. I think the dust is not to bad, maybe with the background a little happier and brighter it would look m

great input. unfortunately I don't have control over the image of the girl and the background has to be red. (i love clients sometimes!) haha

I am going to punch up the colour in the stars and get rid of the dust.

Looking back at this, have you considered moving the student to one side and making the starburst illustration asymetric, bursting from one corner?

I think part of the problem for me is it's all to centered.

I feel there are too many styles and effects which don't blend together.

Check out this guys, it may inspire you to work on your illustration more:

There's something wrong with the student's right arm -- it's as if someone distorted the lengths of the upper and lower halves of the right arm to accommodate the book. It's unnatural to the point of being creepy -- a mood further emphasized by the student's bizarre facial expression, as has already been noted.

The zooming stars remind me of Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles graphics, or maybe a 70s-80s kiddie show that's trying too hard to be "cool."

What's the message supposed to be? That school is cool? If so, ask a kid to interpret this design and listen very carefully to what they tell you.
