Editable Smart Objects

Smart objects is extremely useful for designers putting together layouts in Photoshop. Not having to worry about resizing logos and other vector elements is a huge help.

You can not only transform and apply filters to these layers without destructing them, but also edit them in Illustrator and save them back right into Photoshop.

To edit the shapes of smart objects, find their layer that is marked with a small page icon in the lower right corner of the layer thumbnail and simply double click it. This action will open Illustrator where you can edit the untransformed version of the your vector. Once you save the file and return to Photoshop you will immediately see the modified smart object.

A raster layer that is a smart object will be edited in Photoshop when you double click on them.

what's even more useful is a non-destructive resize for bitmap smart objects, as well as smart filters, and the ability to store an RGB smart object in a CMYK document, and the ability to have two smart objects with separate filters that both link to the same file (update 2+ layers by changing one smart object).

they're quite useful, i use them for everything now.

maybe in CS4 blending modes will work properly in smart objects, so i can get rid of groups altogether.

what about working on a server, here, when you try to edit a smart object (from a different machine), photoshop can't find it.

cheers

The fact that the file is on a server shouldn't affect the functionality. I know it's not much help...

According to me, photoshop is the best than illustrator because it gives good image clarity, though i have not used this kind of process yet hope gives a better result. Thanks for your great idea.
