Illustrator chiseled text..
mbennett2 (442 points) | Wed, 2008-01-30 01:11Unfortunately, I need to produce some "hard chiseled" text in Illustrator. It needs to be done in one spot color (percentages are ok), and I also need to produce a version that will work with one color, no percentages (100% black only).
Bleh.
Does anyone know of a spot where I might see an easy tutorial that fits the confines of my requirements or have any tips for me? Thanks... I'm off to shoot myself now.

Is there not a font out there you could buy?
How about an example of what you're looking for.
Is this something similar to what you're looking for? http://home.zonnet.nl/epragt/tutorials/photoshop/text/chiseled/index.jsp.htm
I'll have to find an example when I get a chance. Maybe that will help
The following link provides a rough example of the type of effect I need to create, except I just want the text and not the background and all that.

This is for a logo for a client who saw something neato and *insists* that I provide him with this look. Being a logo, I would obviously prefer to do this in illustrator, although I could just hand him a 483Mb tiff and choke the life out of his computer.
Sigh. I normally wouldn't want to do it, but sometimes I am a design whore. Stupid playstation 3. Next christmas it is wooden toys...
Perhaps the answer is to use effects (Bevel, Drop Shadow, etc) on your text in Photoshop and save as a Photoshop PDF to preserve the vector info. Had a similar brief recently & came up with this:

which seems similar to what you are looking for, except this was cmyk. However, I just tested my original file & reduced to grayscale in Photoshop & the integrity of the effect was maintained, so printing one colour shouldn't be a problem.
That picture is layer-style-arrific. Thanks for the input, but I really am looking for an Illustrator alternative.
In Illustrator, try going under Effect pulldown menu, to 3D to submenu extrude and bevel. Play around in there with what angle of light you want, what bevel, etc. and then hit it with a final drop shadow of approx. 75% (or lighter) multiple found under Filer>Stylize>Drop Shadow. Worst comes to worse, break out the sharpie...

I took my own advice and rendered something quick. I can send to you for a start if you want. It's looking close to what you wish to accomplish with this logo.
