Impression of Designers

Pretty much everyone in the public think that graphic designers, or any other designers for that matter, have a weird fashion sense, and are an underpaid bunch. A lot of people who know I do design, think that it's pretty funny 'cause I look very ordinary. Anyone encountered the same thing?

The only difference I've noticed amongst designers in terms of fashion is that we tend to wear brighter colors... but even that could all just be in my head. As for underpaid... well....
Being underpaid, depends on who you are working with.
Some clients might tend to slash prices as they witness the process on how designers work around on the product, hence being underpaid.
Not everyone understands how much effort is needed to design something before working it out using a program, which if you are good in software, you make it seem like an easy task.
Fashion sense? Depends on personality and perhaps what you are working on currently. It's the same as being in a correct atmosphere to trigger the right ideas. But not like every designer has a crazy wardrobe of attire to choose from. : þ
... I do look like a designer cliche at times in work by wearing jeans & t-shirt whilst everyone else is more smart casual. I was heading to Glasgow last week for a business meeting and was pondering over what to wear (not in a girly way mind you!!) and a colleague suggested I go in jeans & t-shirt, otherwise the client mightn't know I was the designer!! :o)
Underpaid?? I think most of us are, and we're certainly almost all over worked. I have a list of things to get through at the minute in work, and every time one thing gets checked off, another four have been added!!
Now, where's my lottery ticket... Surely I've won by now!?!
Agree with the fashion thing lol.
the dress we were says a lot about the personality ...there might be a relation between dress sense and design sense ... like in my previous company there was a designer who I thought loves psychedelic/grunge style by the dress ... in other forum there was a question why designers prefer black t-shirt and blue jeans ... surprisingly when I was reading that I was wearing the same thing.

Actually I have a couple of black shirts and blue jeans and I do match them often lol... Do you mean that your favourite design style is reflected in dressing? It's true too lol..
I like to think I dress very clean, but when the weekends come around its jeans time. Nothing like a good pair of jeans to make you relax, just like there is nothing like a good pair of khackies to make you feel sleek.
I do confess to wanting blank t-shirts. I don't much care for graphic Ts most of the time. Of course, I don't have an uban outfitters to buy from where I live...drat.
Cheers..
