InDesign DRM
mck (0 points) | Fri, 2006-02-24 21:32When you release a file onto the internet that contains hours of your work, it's pretty much on its own. Digital rights management is not-existent, anyone can copy, alter, and modify it.
Not when you're giving out PDF's of the document. In InDesign, when you use the File>Export command, there's a security tab. This lets you set restrictions on who can access the file, and what they can do with it.

Document Open Password
This option encrypts the document with 128-bit encryption (which is pretty much the best there is — and it's compatible with Acrobat 5 or later).
Permissions
With this option in place, readers can view your document but not edit or print it. You can set a password, as well as what changes are allowed and whenther printing is. You can also set wether copying of text and images is allowed. (Of course, this doesn't protect against people making screenshots).

It's a shame that Apple's PDF options don't incorporate more than basic security.
As far as I know, the only other software that I know of that has anything close to Adobe's options is Stone Studios' PSStill.

There is some software called eBook Pro that takes care of this issue, although at $197 it may cost more than most people are willing to spend. It does let you turn off access to a document remotely though, so if anyone turns your work loose on the net you can shut them down.

the link to ebook pro leads to a product that's a) for windoze machines only and b) is the sort of product that i'd run from, as soon as look at.
maybe i should have spake thus..
..it's a shame there are few options for producing the mentioned pdf encryption/locking on the apple platform

I tend to run from their style of marketing too, though the software itself is supposed to be good -- apart from no Mac support, which is pretty weird....
I have some of this company's marketing courses, which are great, especially for people like me who are trying to make a living by earning passive income from the net. Still, even though their marketing methods work very well for them, I tend to tone them down a decibel or two for my own purposes.
