InDesign Blind Emboss

Hi. I need to set up an area of my page for the printer to put on a blind embossed logo. How can I do that in InDesign?

thanks

Set the artwork to be embossed up as a Pantone color in the proper place in your file and on a new layer and inform the printer that you've done this. Don't forget to remind them that Pantone ink does NOT PRINT.

But what happens when I save it as a PDFX? Will it convert the spot to process?

The printer knows they are getting the blind emboss part but just in case, I don't want them printing the spot color AS WELL. :)

Since you've put the emboss artwork on a separate layer, set the layer to be non-printing.

Also, as noted below, talk to your printer. They may prefer it a different way. But the way I've mentioned should work fine.

Export a pdf with only that pms in it. One in press ready (but not x) format. As long as the registration is identical the printer can work with it.

Why not provide two files? One with a positional in for where the blind emboss hits and a second one with the graphic removed; the second one being the one that they would use for printing.

have you talked to the printer? they may have a way they prefer you set things up. it's always best to work with them on things like this, especially if you're not sure how to do it. not that you might not get good advice here on how to do it, but this is exactly the kind of question printers wish designers would ask them up front (well, good printers, at least). if you have a good rep, they'll take the time to work with you and teach you as much as they can about good production.

The client just informed me that he wants to go to his own printer, so I told him whatever printer he decides on they need to call me to tell me how to set up the artwork. But I think, to be safe, I will take 3dogmama's advice and just send the bind emboss area as a separate file.

You've got to talk to the printer and do what they prefer OR tell the client you will not be responsible for the outcome.

If you talk to the printer you should also bill for your time. If the client doesn't like that, give them the files and consider your responsibility for this job complete.

Do you guys know how to create a blind emboss in photoshop? I need to do a quick mock up for a client. Any advice?

Set the graphic you want to use for the blind emboss on it's own layer. Apply a slight/subtle bevel to it using layer effects. Then adjust the layer's opacity to zero using the Layer FILL slider (not the Layer Opacity slider above it). The shape on the layer should disappear, but the bevel should still be there.

You could also use a subtle outer glow effect instead of a bevel... but you get the idea.
