InDesign blogger needed
Submitted by Ivan on Sat, 2005-08-20 21:03.
Jim, the InDesign pro used to post great InDesign tips, but since he started his own site http://www.jdempsey.com/ he doesn't post InDesign tips on cb anymore.
I'd like to learn about InDesign more and I've received at least 5 emails in the last few weeks from people asking for more InDesign tips.
I'm no good in InDesign, learning it myself. It looks like it's going to be the winner within the publishing applications, so I guess it's worth putting the effort into learning it properly.
If you are good at InDesign (or know someone who is), which means you're the one usually giving advice to coworkers around you and not vica versa and willing to spend half an hour a week on blogging about it, please let me know!
* raises hand...
I use InDesign frequently, and I know some InDesign tips. What frequency should they be posted at?
Let's try weekly. I can't
Let's try weekly. I can't take in more than that. Unless they are really simple ones. Thanks.
OK.
I'll be gone for about a week, after that, I'll start
I'll try to contibute as well
I work with InDesign frequently as well, I'm ready to awnser(**or try to awnser) all the question that are asked or give a hand to Mackie.
Mackie, if you want, contact me by email or AIM.
Count me in too
I use InDesign CS every day at the moment as I instigated migrations from Quark about a year ago. So I'll post up my pearls of wisdom (or boredom depending on how I do).
I'll try one tomorrow whilst Mackie is away.

Im just trying to reinvent my whole image etc and something I wanna know (purely so Im not scared of the program lol) is InDesign.
Hopefully there will be help for the absolutly newbie too ^_^
Nice
I've been taught Quark at school but want to be proficient with InDesign as well. It's hard to just teach yourself a layout program though unless you've got projects to do! I look forward to these tips!

Thanks for the great
Thanks for the great response guys!
If you InDesign guys can
If you InDesign guys can give case studies from your work it would be great. Don't have to name clients but just how InDesign helped you get a job done in an efficient way.
About two years ago I had to produce a contacts directory of about 150 pages and 2000 contacts. The previous version of the directory had been done in Quark and all the entries had been inputted manually by the designer. InDesign 2 was released and I had heard about a data processing plug in called InData. With one small plug in I was able to write a stylesheet determing how one contact would lookand how the entry text should flow. I was able to take excel spreadsheets, word documents and text files with contact information and combine them in one comma separated file. InData & InDesign then took this file and basically built the directory using predefined styles, created pages on the fly and reflowed any awkward entries. I was gobsmacked it worked as this was the first time I had worked with InDesign and had expected major hiccups integrating it into a workflow.

PDF/X-1a workflow
Printers love this format because when you export it won't allow a file that has missing fonts or bad images. And they are super small and print great.
Export/Choose PDF/X-1a format.

InDesign Blogger
Well people I just passed my ACE (Adobe Certified Expert) exam in InDesign CS2. So maybe I can help. The problem is what do people want? Where do they want help? Just general? Tips and tricks? 0r just explaining the interface? How would we setup an Indesign blog? Could we do with some conferencing, maybe working together could just work out fine. Everybody has some experiences but I think no one has all the answers (or it should be a terrible geek). Sometimes the soft is so elaborated that working together helps more people. By the way teaching this Indesign thing is my profession. So what do you think: just go for the ins and outs or wait for the questions and solve those? Or a combination of the two?
glad to hear some ideas
Ugh... sorry!
I actually planned to post here more often than I do. As it is, when I get a few hours to spare, I enter about 10-15 tips in the Creative Guy hopper and let it auto post them each day. I've been so busy with work the last few months, and just when I thought it was going to lighten up, the workload nearly doubled. Add to that a new freelance client and my time is just sucked dry.
If there are any particular questions, I can try to jump in with the other users to answer them, and I'll try to post tips about ID.

I'd like to know how to
I'd like to know how to easily transition from Quark to InDesign but I think that's a totally different subject. I think I should just get a book on that or something in that regard.

Quark to Indesign
InDesign opens Quark 4 files natively, you just have to do some basic updating of links and you're pretty much there. Watch out for placed eps files being set for overprint, however.
Otherwise, MARKZWARE has a $150-200 plug in to convert versions of Quark files higher than 4.
InDesign's is much like using Illustrator only with Multiple pages. ;) Once you start using it, you'll wonder why you ever waited. ;)

My husband is a pro at InDesign... I'm constantly bugging him for shortcuts and tips.. he also makes his own applescripts to help his workflow. He'd be perfect, I'll see if he's interested.
Everyone asks me questions too...
Could we start an InDesign specific Forum on creativebits so we can post as we think of things?

INDY /CS2 CS3 Trainer Here
Trainers need training too! Here I am.
My most recent head-banger is CS3's output delivery method. We are seeing an upsurge in gray elements/docs/ads outputting with color information on the CMY plates, as well. We have sone troubleshooting with export options, print drivers and color profiles.
My company has recently undergone 2 significant maneuvers; CS3 upgrade and Direct To Plate technology. OK, so the refining process when we use the DTP method makes all files pretty tight and true. However, our convoluted process may also include the introductions of Quark XPress 4 & 6.5, INDY CS2 and Rips to Neg. That said, INDY CS3 seems to prefer to kick out more process black than we were hoping.
In general, what have you users, trainers or educators seen by way of color interpretation woes in the INDY realm?
Much Thanks!
