InDesign CS3 problem with page numbering
Hale Gay (12 pencils) | Tue, 2008-01-22 21:26I am having a problem with automatic numbering pages with the InDesign CS3 version. I am using a video tutorial that demonstrates that page numbering can start with any number that one wishes, such as starting with page 2 (this would be the beginning....say of a chapter). I have gone to the Numbering and Sections menu under pages panel. Then I have inserted the number of the page that I want the page numbering to start at and selected the radio button clicked "Start page numbering at" ___. The pages still start numbering at page 1.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to get this problem fixed?

Sounds like you are doing everything correct with the pages panel. Are you inserting the correct variable in your layout? Right click the text area and go to Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number.

Thanks so much for your reply. Perhaps I'm not inserting the correct variable. I go to the numbering and sections flyout, get the dialog box and put in the page number in the appropriately place. I haven't inserted any other variables.
I don't understand what you mean by clicking on the text area. Is this area where I want the page number to go? After numbering the pages and getting the incorrect results I have gone to the Special Character>Markers. Current page Number is not accessable at this point.
Perhaps a little more explaination will help.
Thanks,
Hale
I have found that I can get the right response from when I put in page numbers on my laptop. Although I have reinstalled the CS software on my desktop it doesn't change the error in the way it numbers pages.
I need some help. Can someone tell me if it is possible to have two sets of page numbers on pages in a document?
I have a document that is 293 pages long. I would like each page to have a page number, and each chapter to have a chapter number followed by a chapter page number. For example page 148 would look like this in the lower corner:
3-1
148
Page 149 would read:
3-2
149
and so on until I reached a new chapter. Then the chapter and its number would start again, but the page number would continue its succession.
4-1
194
Not sure if this is possible, just need to make sure it's not before I tell my boss.
