InDesign CS5 & Memory Allocation?
ivyR 4cv (6 pencils) | Wed, 2011-06-08 15:22Maybe you can help?
I realize that CS5 can take up a lot of memory with files, yet the computer I'm working with is lagging on Everything, and at times, completely running 'Out Of Memory', and as of yesterday, I get the grey screen that tells me to completely shut down... Always with InDesign files open.
So, here's the breakdown:
Mac Pro
Running 10.6.7
2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel
4 GB Hardrive space - All Ok according the the System Profiler.
System has the entire creative suite - most is never used or open. Just the usual, Photoshop, InDesign and sometimes Illustrator.
I have already went into the Adobe preferences to make sure there was enough space allocated to the programs.. This seemed OK for Photoshop, yet I cannot find the same preference for InDesign. Anyone know where that might be? Or if it's even neccesary?
And to top it off - single page files seem OK, it's the 10 page and above that are killing my computer.
Help, Anyone??

It could be a lot of things. Is 4GB your hard drive or your RAM? What kind of files are you working on with InDesign? Do they have lots of large links? Do you have tons of fonts installed? How full is your hard drive? Did you defrag it recently? Check for virus/malware/hardware issues with more than one security program? Update to the latest patches for all Adobe programs? Check the task manager to see what's using your CPU/RAM? Post a crash report to Adobe or other help sites?
Thank You for getting the Convo Started!
OK,
4GB of Memory
Recently checked for Permissions to repair - All was OK.
Also, downloaded Sophos Anti Virus - All OK
Posted Crash Reports to Adobe, when available.
There are 2 Hard Drives, One (with Applications, Op System, ect) has 717 GB available
AND a second with 999 GB available.
The files I'm currently creating are near 20 links on 16 pages, 2 fonts used.
1,120 fonts installed.
And the CPU/RAM in the task manager: close to 98% Idle space.
Hopefully, I addressed everything..
Any Ideas where to go next?
1120 fonts is a lot to run at once and InDesign gets cranky about that. Try disabling all but what you absolutely need for a while and see if you're still crashing. Beyond that, everything seems good, I'd see what the Adobe techs think about your crash reports to figure out what to do next.
If you have live preflight running that could cause InD to crash when the document has multiple pages and lots of effects going on (drop shadows, bevels etc) or even big graphic files like .psd and .tiff. Try running the application with live preflight off and see if it helps any.
