InDesign Help Needed ASAP
Hey there,
I have just recently graduated from university and whilst travelling overseas have been offered some freelancing work. Not being able to speak the local language whilst on the other side of the world from my home town has made it difficult to ask for help. So i thought i would try out the net.
So here i go...
The brief is to design 2 book covers and the grid for their inside pages. There are two things i cant work out. One is automatic page numbering. I need to create one for the introduction which needs to be in roman numerals, and the other to start numbering from the first page of the first chapter. Can i allocate a place, size, type for the page number to be? Then, how do i select a page where the numbering is to finish?
Secondly, i am having difficulties with drop caps. I created them through paragraph styles/dropcaps and nested styles. I only want them used once at the start of a new chapter, however, each time i enter to start a new paragraph another drop cap is made.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
place the automatic page
place the automatic page number on your master page. then select the first page that the roman numerals need to be, click on the flyout in the pages palette, and select "numbering & section options." in that dialog, you'll see under page numbering "style." change that to be roman numbering (there are upper and lower case options, i presume you need lower case). hit ok. then select the first page that needs arabic numbering and click the flyout in the pages palette again. change "automatic page numbering" to "start page numbering at" and select "1". hit ok.
that should set you up for the page numbering, with the first part of the document in roman numerals and the second starting at page 1 in arabic.
you need to create two different styles to fix your drop cap. one style that i would call "body text drop cap" that has the drop cap and one that i would call "body text" without the drop cap. when you hit enter from the first paragraph with the drop cap (style: body text drop cap), by default it creates a new paragraph with the same style. you can then change the style on the next paragraph to be "body text" and it will remove the drop cap.
you can also change the drop cap style under paragraph style options / general to make it automatically change to "body text" when you hit enter. under "next style," change it from "[same style]" to "body text." then next time you assign the first para to be body text drop cap and hit enter, it will automatically change the next style to be "body text."
