InDesign Master (automatically linking text with different Masters)
drobinet (5 pencils) | Sun, 2006-05-21 19:52Hi! I am a teacher in graphic design and we keep stumbling on that one in InDesign CS and CS2 :
Master A has a 2 columns automatic text bloc.
Master B has a 1 column text bloc linked to the 2 columns automatic text bloc.
Working with Master A only on the pages is OK, the text flows through, no problem. BUT whenever Master B is applied to a page of the document, the new text blocs don't link with the current flow and the old text bloc (from Master A) are still present with the text in it.
(Yes, I know Quark does change Master A to B without problems)
Any shortcuts that should be use ? We've search a lot on the Web without any answer.
Thanks!

Hi,
InDesign workflow is totally different from Quark.
Normally you would create masterpages with colums within your margins settings in InDesign, not textblocks.
Master A: you create a two colum layout.
Master B: just one colum within your pagemargins
Before you apply a different master to a page go to menu 'Layout' > layout adjustment. Activate this option.
When you change the master from A to B or from B to A, the new layout will make your text reflow.
I have my Layout Adjustmernt always on. If you want that you can by opening InDesign and without a document open go to the same menu and option mentioned above and from now on your layout adjustment will always be on.
Remind that InDesign was build on the experience of Adobe with it's other layout prog Pagemaker, where things worked in the same way.
If you still want to work with different text blocks you can do that in CS2 with the object styles.
Create an textframe with one colum and one with two colums. apply those styles to textframes you want to have a different layout.
Hope this solves your problem
