InDesign Problems....
markbowen (20 pencils) | Wed, 2006-07-05 21:42Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone has ever had this problem. I think it may?? be something to do with running InDesign on a MacBook Pro (Intel) but not too sure.
If I try to create a new A4 page or any page with decimal dimensions such as 21 * 29.7 then the 29.7 comes out as 29.699969996999698 cm!!!
In fact any numbers that contain decimal dimensions come out really funny even when the page has come up X & Y positions and dimensions are all wrong too.
If anyone has ever seen this and can lend an answer then this would be great, thanks.
I know that InDesign isn't actually an Intel version yet and I do run it as production on a different (non-intel) machine but I would really like to convert to my new MacBook as it is just so much faster.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
Best wishes,
Mark

Strange things happen with all the Adobe products and has nothing to do with your IntelMac. The same thing happens in Illustrator or Photoshop. behind the scenes Adobe uses a logarithm to change your decimal settings but it is based on Inches and that way there are always little differences.
Nothing you can do about it. Hopefully they will get this bug out of the next version of the Creative Suite that will see the light may next year.
Hi fidel,
So if I use inches then the problem should disappear?
I only ask as I have used the exact same program on a G4 for ages and then thought I would give it a try on the MacBook just to see how fast it would run and had all these kinds of problems appear.
I'm not actually using it on both computers as that would be a breach of copyright but just installed very quickly to see how it would run. Seems to run fine (better than fine actually) but just has a real problem with decimals.
That's why I thought it might be the MacBook as I use the exact same program on a G4 from my same install disk.
Thanks for your reply though.
Best wishes,
Mark
I have the same problem now that I'm using an Intel Mac; if I type in 1.25 inches, it changes to 1.25002500250025. I never had this problem until I started using an Intel Mac. Even the default page sizes end up like this. For example: letter=8.5005005005. Very annoying. I hope there is a fix soon.
HI Hector,
That's exactly the same thing I get here as well. I have noticed that sometimes if I open up a file that was created on a machine without any problems and then leave that open in the background whilst working on the new file it (the problem) usually doesn't happen any more! Not always the way but most of the time.
Pretty annoying though, I mean, I have been using page layout programs of one sort or another on the Mac for as long as I care remember right back to the good old days of Aldus Freehand!!
Hope they can fix it soon. Seems a bit too basic to have this kind of problem.
Best wishes,
Mark
Why not just use the A4 preset instead of entering the numbers manually? Might be a good workaround...

Hi Nathaniel,
Have tried that but if you choose it the numbers still change into weird decimals!!
I suppose I will have to wait until they bring out the new version CS3 before doing any serious production work.
Thanks anyway though.
Best wishes,

This has been driving me bonkers since getting my intel, which I thought was the problem, so I am at relieved that it's not that. Thanks guys.

The answer is: it's a bug in Rosetta. The rumor is that Apple will be fixing this bug in their next systrem update foir the Intels, so cross your fingers.
with the new mac OSX update the problem is solved. But you will have a problem on an Intel Mac with the pathfinder in Illustrator
One thing solved, one problem created
