InDesign question - linking text on master

I need help with something in InDesign.
I have a empty layout of certain amount of pages and I'm gonna insert text from a text document that is a few pages long.
In the master I've made columns and when I insert the text on page one, I want it automaticly to link all my text colums together, so I don't have to do it manually... so my text will (with one insert command) fill out my whole document.

(I know that I can manually link them together with the red plus sign, but if my document is 300 pages long, that will take precious time!)

Anyone smart enough? :)

new doc => facing pages => go to your first page => create text boxes on the page => duplicate that spread 2x so that you have 3 pages => link page one with two and then with three => drag pg 2 and pg3 to the duplicate/new page icon => now you should have 5 pgs. => link pg 3 with 4 and you have 5 pages linked with only linking 4 times => select pgs 1-5 and drag them to the duplicate spread icon => link page 5 with 6 => now you have ten pages linking only 5 times => 20 pages only 6 => 40 pgs only 7 => 80 pages only 8 times => you get me? right? 160 pgs 9 times => 320 pgs 10 times. a little work but not that much.

hmmm... this sounds logical... and surely is a sollution....

but i'll be damned if there is no way to do this automaticly in ID... it was possible in *gasp* Quark!

To fill all colums with your text just use File>Place, selcect the text file and then hold the SHIFT key while clicking on the first column.
This also generates new pages with your text filled in if necessary. There are other options if you RTFM.

that is what you get for using ID to make 50+ policemans awards. i did learn something at that craptacular job.
but i was never able to do that in quark 4.... was that a newer feature to update quark from 4 to 5 and to charge for the newer version... or was it 5 to 6. i swear that program has never changed

in Quark: in master page view - a link symbol appears in the upper left of each page. Select the link tool (option select if you want to make more than one link) and click from the link symbol to first text box.

Return to page view and paste your text into your first text box. Quark will create and flow as many pages as are required.

This feature has been in the app since (at least) v3.

(InDesign is the least intuitive layout app I've ever used - and I used Framemaker!)

Hi,

If you create a master page with 3 colums and this master page is your A-master page. It is much simpler.

Open your document with the three colums master page apllied to the first page.

Then place your textfile. Before clicking in the first colum hold down the shift Key. Your cursus will change of shape. Now click in the first colum and Indesign will flow the text in the following colums and create new pages if needed.

That's teh way I do it.

why is this thread on the front page? did I do that? did someone else?
I'm confused!
