i have created a document with 4 columns and placed text tables from ms word after adjusting everything to match up i find that i cant control the hight of the table to fit exactly in the column. not all raw are equal in height some contain placed graphics but is there anyway to fit table to column?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

You might find that creating the document in InDesign, complete with tables would be a better way to go. I have never tried to copy a table from Word (InDesign is much better for layouts) but if you create the tables in InD, then copy the CONTENT from word and paste inside the InD table, that should work a lot better. You can then format the InD table for the text.

actually, what I do is copy/paste the table in from word, then select and convert to text, then select and convert back to indesign. that keeps the table structure but completely removes any word formatting. works really well from excel, too.
"works really well..." except in this case. :)
Sounds like more work than you need unless other users require these word documents? With all the edits sounds like it would be easier to just recreate the table rather than copy from word.
You could try just importing the tables all by themselves (in new files away from the original file) to your ID doc and see if that fixes the issue.

You can't set the height of an entire table, because tables grow to fit the data. But you can adjust the height of each cell in the table. Reduce the height by changing the cell heights from "at least" to "exactly" from the drop down menu in the Tables panel, then enter an amount (or use the arrow buttons) to reduce the height of each row of cells (or all at once). This will reduce the overall height of the table.
