The winning 2010 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ emblem named “Inspiração” (Inspiration) is created by Brazilian agency Africa. The design stems from an iconic photograph of three victorious hands together raising the world's most famous trophy. As well as depicting the humanitarian notion of hands interlinking, the portrayal of the hands is also symbolic of the yellow and green of Brazil warmly welcoming the world to their country.

Like it a lot, pays homage to the trophy and incorporates the Brazilian colors.
Besides the logo shape looking like the trophy, it doesn't have anything to do with football. In fact, this logo would work well for a volleyball trophy.
Some interesting facts. The jury included Ricardo Teixeira (President of CBF), Jerome Valcke (Secretary of FIFA), Oscar Niemeyer (Brazilian architect, designer of Brasilia), Paulo Coelho (international bestselling Brazilian writer), Gisele Bundchen (Brazilian model), Hans Donner (Brazilian, head visual designer of TV Globo) and Ivete Sangalo (Brazilian pop singer).

My first look at this logo was accompanied by the following image:
The comparison between these two images is one of those, "What has been seen can't be unseen," situations.
Which means you all are stuck thinking about it every time you see it, now. ... Sorry.
But I do like it for the same reasons as ItalianMike notes above! ... Perhaps it's too late for that...
It will be fitting to every missed goal situation. :)

I guess nearly every football fan (jep I didn't call it 'soccer') knows the cup. If so, I think the logo is pretty simple and good. And it´s always possible to make fun of a logo - I liked the idea of the picard-image 'hand in front of a head'.
It´s OK with me.

Agreed. Good concept poor execution. It looks like the alien from 'Close encounters of the third kind' being suffocated by Gumby and friends..

Have anyone counted the fingers, 14 of 2014 that's cool, but why they are all squeezing or hiding it. According to me, World Cup logo should look open, fluent, flare, cheerful ....

I can peg how this went wrong... good idea, too much reliance on software. If someone had taken the time to sit down and sketch this out and really work some life into the design the fingers they wouldn't look so... flat and fat at the same time.
