Check out the new YouTube look codenamed Cosmic Panda. It shows a somewhat different look from Google+ and the new Gmail themes, but it's also clean and simple.

There's definitely a lot of positives to it, I love the look and it's simple but I really don't think the bubble button drop down for the user account settings (top right) is needed. It looks out of place all on its own, could of just been a simple gradient and clean typography without the bubble theme for the entire top interface.
Finally. YouTube gets a proper design. Like many Google sites, great usability but ugly design ;p will we see a Gmail upgrade soon as well?

Go to your account settings.
My gmail has a link "Preview Gmail's new look" at the top right. If you don't have it you can still go to themes and find it labelled "Preview" and "Preview (Dense)".

It's interesting that YouTube's design and branding isn't moving closer to the unification of designs that they are doing in Gmail, Calendar, Google+, and all their other services.
People still see YouTube as a separate entity. However, I would tend to agree with your question. Wouldn't integrating the brand only raise its value?
