When does a design become viewable ?

tripdragon's picture

Lets see here I was wanting to post something to fill the void.. When does a design becomes viewable? Like in, when are you ready to show it to people and take critques? Some post junk and some post gorgeous designs of absolute art even for just a website.. And on that note, the phrase "I design websites" and followed by that is "Oh is that all" just diggs at me.. :<

But how long does it take to post that ?? How long did someone work on it good or bad. When should you stop and show it to the world ??

There are no answers here just ponderings..

Note this image is just color.. I dont care if it's good or not I did it in literly 3 minutes..
Also note to admin PLEASE put the code to make a page break in the footnote of the page here under the form edit box I can never remember what it is :P

When does a post become viewable?

I'm sorry - I try not to be too negative in comments, but I mean what on earth? Your post is about how long one should take before submitting a design for viewing, and then goes on to show that you didn't even take the time to run the text of your post through a spell checker before posting it. You then go on to mention that the design you submitted was done in three minutes and implied that it’s crap. All I can say is that based on your post’s content, the answer to your question would be: For you… never.

But the idea was more of an understanding at what point do they give it their all and submit to get comments, praise or bashing via the world..

uhm??

I have to agree with eclecticmunk on this one. To start with "I was wanting to post something to fill the void" is in itself a hint of what was to come with this... the topic took a few turns. The end of your first paragraph completely baffles me; I’m still trying to decipher it.

Maybe the idea of the post would have to just made suggestions on what people should say when posting designs/concepts/works. Maybe give us ideas on what to say like "here's my design, here's the clients wishes, here's the concept/idea behind it, and here's the time I spent on it"

Instead, it seems like you just threw together something just to say you got one more blog out there. Again, like eclecticmunk said, I don’t want to sound negative, but this one just falls really short of what it could have been.

it seems pretty obvious to me

I really don't understand why everyone felt this was a futile post. I find that this is a question everyone should be asking him(her)self. I am not into graphics myself, but my girlfriend is. She is a plastic artist, a painter to be more precise and she faces this problem oh so very often. When you paint a portrait or a landscape you might be able to tell when it's done, but as an abstract painter things get more dificult.

While there are times when she is working in her studio for 10 - 12 hours a day and several weeks and comes up with a great canvas, some other times she just starts playing with a brush on a canvas while we are talking and comes up with an equally great piece of work. And that takes just 10 - 20 minutes.

I am trying to make two points here: one, that IT IS tricky sometimes to tell when a graphic is done. Two, the time you spend on a work is not relevant to the quality of the final product.

Phew, this was a long post...

I think once you have an

I think once you have an idea you can show it. Even if it's just a sketch on paper. You can involve your colleagues at any stage.

And, I want to urge everyone to make an effort to go to the critique section and post your opinion once in a while. Especially give attention to works that only has 2-3 comments. More in this case is better. Do your good deed to your fellow designer.

I remember how eagerly waited for opinions to the works I posted. I'm sure everyone who spent hours and hours creating something will be very anxious to see what others think about his creation.

I agree with you mate

Critiques are not just finished/polished creations but design ideas that you are proposing to put to your client(s) .

One of the best critiques (although I didnt post comments, forgive me) i've seen in the past few weeks has to be gk grab ideas, being able to see how ideas are formed towards every step of the way really helps people understand what direction you want to take.

So, to answer the question, when are crits ready? - when ever you need advice, finished, sketched, whatever - its advice! :)

i fully agree, however..

I full on agree that there's hours spent, no matter how many, and that it's nice to leave feedback especially if we want someone to reply to our own posts. However, the start of this thread was far from thought out, and that i find unfortunate especially on an important topic to a site like CB. The topic wanders around and isn't overly clear.

All in all, yes, there is a question of "how long before someone posts" and i agree that even just having the idea should be enough to post for a critique, it winds up being up to everyone personally.

Me, it changes on each design, most i don't want to post and just want my clients feedback. Some i post when i'm just sketching, and some when i'm near the end. Then there's the last category of posts: the "uhhhhh what now?!?" category where i feel like i've hit a brick wall with my creativity. I suppose that answers the question best, but it wasn't a clear one question to begin with.

And HE gets blogging rights?

Just kidding...

I put up my stuff in various stages and have gotten critical resposes before i spent much more effort on it. Sometimes we live in a desert of artistic opinion and it's nice to hear suggestions and critiques from people who never say " Can't you just...."

eeeekk.. I'll put more

eeeekk..
I'll put more effort in the idea next time..

Regardless of comments and hate. An idea was kinda created, maybe next time these should be more organized with directions..

But it is a blog after all.. Though something to shoot for would be articles like alistapart or istockphoto but thats like a team effort and money....

No hate

Hey. Sheesh, look at all this. Don't get freaked out - nobody hates you. In fact, despite my earlier comments, I'd have to say that this has been a rather successful thread even if it was hastily formulated: Look at how much response it has created. So from that point of view, well done! You made us all think a bit.
