Interactive Flash movie?
pokie (1198 points) | Sat, 2007-07-21 22:31I finally am working on my portfolio site. I had to dig some of my old school stuff off of some back up DVDs. Well, I found one, in particular, which is a very fun interactive movie. The problem is that it was saved as a .mov. My quicktime gets all confused every time I open it and asks me to enable flash. Most of the time it works from my desktop. Sometimes it actually displays it mirrored, but normally is fixed if I close out and reopen.
The huge problem I'm having is putting it into my site. I have it open in a new window (or embed in) and when I click on it, nothing happens. Not a thing. Just black (or was it gray?).
I am upset because it's a really good Flash movie and I really wanted to put it in.
Oh and FYI, it happens in both Safari and Firefox. It just doesn't make sense because it works from my desktop. UGH. I am finding that I didn't save a lot of things in their original format (at least can't find it) and that my filing system really sucked. ;)

do you have a link to it? you sure you used the correct file path?
It definitely has the right path. I may have to put it live to see if anyone can see what it's doing.
Make sure you don't double click the file but drag the app to the quicktime logo in your dock or choose Open with when you right or control click the file and choose Quicktime.

The main problem comes in because it's linked on my website.
Why is that a problem? Just download the file from your webserver. If the file is trapped in a flash file you no longer have, then use Gordon to unlock the flash file and hopefully get at the content.

What is this Gordon you speak of?
It is a problem because I want people to come to my website and click on it and then it open up nicely without any problems. ;)
I ask that because it's still a bit unclear what you're trying to do. Are you trying to break the video file from the flash file so you can have your users download it rather than just view it streaming in the flash file?
Gordon can help you break the file if you don't have the original. Otherwise, just post a .mov file and you're done. The Gordon Flash Decompiler here:

You might need to reembed the movie in a new flash file because I assume the version on your dvd is probably very old (in computer terms). Version 4, perhaps?
Do you have flash loaded in both browsers? Go to adobe.com/flash to download the latest version. Try opening the .mov file in quicktime by using Open With, don't double click the file.

You could always just embed the .MOV file. Here is an example I did awhile back. [Just view the page source]
