Interesting or decadent?
print wiz (20 points) | Sat, 2009-04-18 20:40Inspired by some business cards of metal we saw in the "creative-business-cards" thread, we did some experiments with offset printing on metal and then someone had the idea "Why not solid silver or gold?
This is the result... And now the question is, "Interesting or decadent?"
We'd like to hear your opinion.

I can't think of a situation where a gold card would be perceived positively, except for a bling bling style rapper.
They would make a fantastic gift for a University Graduation, a 25-year or retirement gift for an employee, employee of the year gift, etc.
They're certainly not made for actually using as a business card, but as a gift item I think they're very slick!

Yes, I agree. Not as business card, but as a gift.
Gift cards for very particular employees, yes, THAT's a nice idea! :)
I like this idea too!
I like it and would love to know who would approve the budget on this bad boy.

Shoot, if I had that kind of money to blow, I wouldn't mind handing out gold or silver business cards. ;)
Actually, the silver one is really, really nice. I like it a lot.
In any case, I like the gift idea for them, too. But I wouldn't completely discount the notion of marketing these cards to the right kind of people for their standard business cards.
actually, i see an oddly different application for them.
since 98% of what I do at my job now is short run (and by short run, i mean less than 20 and sometimes less than 10), a huge chunk of what i do is handwork. i could see having a handful of these printed as "plates" that I could then attach to a cover and have, say, a bound book cover or paper that's too heavy/dark for digital printing that had a plate with the title information (client name, project, etc). either attached with adhesive (less attractive to me since it's not sustainable) or with grommets/rivets.
out of curiosity, what would the cost for a run of 25 of these be?
I assume for this application it is only realistic to make the plates realize in aluminum or brass as one single card of silver already costs about 325 USD ;)
yes, i think you're right. $325 per would be a bit out of a reasonable price range. but brass or copper or polished aluminum might work just as well.

By the way, there are paper stocks out there that are quite thick, glossy and use a gold or silver foil on one side which you can print full color onto. They're actually quite impressive.
The latest issue of Graphic Design USA magazine has a sample sheet in it and it's quite stunning.
