Invisible Agent logo - HELP!!!!

hi,

i've been a lurker on this site for quite while now and finally thought it was about time to have some communication. i have always found the critiques to have some good constructive criticism so hopefully somebody will be able to help me out on this project.

right, so this is the craic. i'm currently working on a logo for an independant record label based in ireland, they specialise in releasing electro / breakbeat / techno CD / vinyl / digital downloads. they need a logo as they have never had any kind of consistent branding and the time has finally come to sort this out.

i'm really at a loss on this one and have been flailing about for some time not knowing what direction to take. so the rquirement is to have a simple strong logo that can be used in a variety of mediums; website, business cards, stickers on 12" vinyl sleeve, centre sticker on vinyl, cd face, t-shirts, hoodies etc. so there is a need for it to work in most imaginable situations. so it needs to be simple and without any complicated effects, gradients etc.

also something to consider is where it says 'records' this will change depending on where the logo is being used; records, radio, visuals, podcast etc. for this i would like the logo to be identical in each case where just the 'records' text will be changed.

so what is required here is text and a symbol of some sort, i think i'm reasonably happy with the tet, i think that it will stand out from a distance for instance a record on a shelf in a shop etc. but the symbol part is the part i'm really having difficulty with. i have long since given up on trying to come up with a ymbol that represents what the label is about because they do so much stuff that i don't think one image can sum that up. all i want to do is have a nice simple symbol that is striking and that you will be able to recognise whether the text is there or not.

right i think i have explained myself as best i can, sorry for the long post but there is a bit to take into consideration here. if anybody has any helpful suggestions i'd really appreciate it as i'm lost as to what direction to go in.

but VERY complicated! I guess thats because the brief is such. There is an INKLING of an idea there, but its doesnt seem to be coming through.

I like the 3rd from top on the left, that one's interesting.

I would split this logo into two sections. Concentrate on the icon's first. . . distill it down to varying symbols that communicate the different areas that this logo will be used, make them symbols rather than pictures. Then when you're happy with the direction and style of the iconography. . . add your text, this should be SIMPLE. Simple, right now that's whats throwing me with these executions. . . the typeface is ALL over the place. The icons will direct your style of typeface when you start thinking about them. . .

i´m not really sure which one of the symbols is the perfect one. I like the first one on the top (right). But the only thing i´m really sure is that you have to change the typo, it´s to bold, and right now the most simple you do it the most it will work for all kind of mediums and executions.

The best you can do is make the logo easy to read.

I think the best concept is the third from the top on the right as it somewhat says we do lot of different things. I'm not sure about the typo. Looks too hip/hop hardcore to me.

I think this one looks most complete, you could change the symbol when you change from records to podcasts etc. Also I agree with Ivan about the font although I do like it. Maybe you could use two different fonts to show the versatility of the label? Another option would be to make it slightly less bold or a bit more rounded. Just some ideas.

That's the one that I'd notice most in a record shop.
Seems nicely different to a lot of the Electro/Breaks labels I've seen.

It's also the only one I can see working on clothing if I'm honest, the others are all a little bit bland.

However I have two problems with this one:

1) The logo is too fussy, the shape is fine but I'd make it a flat shape and lose the outline to make it a simple 2 colour print.

2) dump the outline on the text and instead just allow the background to show through to break up the letters, it may mean you limit yourself to not being able to print on white but you could always have a reversed version with the type the same colour as the logo for printing on white backgrounds.
The outline looks too fussy for me.

What may work better is taking the logo from the one beneath it and using that text on the 3rd from top logo.

thanks for your feedback and comments everybody. seems the general consensus is that it is the typography that is letting the whole logo down. typography is definitely where my biggest weakness lies, i've always found it tricky.

i had thought if i got some sort of unique text for the name then it would all fall into place from there and stand out a little bit more but it seems that i need to do some more work on it to tie it in with one of the symbols and probably going for a more minimal style is the way to go.

i'll have a play around with a few things based on your suggestion. cheers for the comments

I don't know why, but I love this one. The one at the very bottom on the right to me, is the best and most attractive. I love your symbol and I love the boxed lettering. It looks really cool.

Everything else has too much of a corporate feel to it; like it's a dot.com company and not a record label, etc. It just fits for me. It just really flows together nicely.

I can totally picture this logo published in either book, los logos or dos logos. Their books are filled with non-traditional, funky logos and I can totally visualize this logo in there among the many great, funky logos out there.

Personally? I wouldn't change a thing on this one. That's my opinion.

I'm curious, what does the client think?

thanks for the very kind words suzanne. i get the impression that the client thinks that all the logos are OK but none of them are quite right yet. i'm working on developing the ideas a bit and will post them up for critique when i get something i'm reasonably happy with.
