Opera Mini for iPhone

Impressive presentation of the new Opera Mini iPhone application recently submitted to the App Store. Opera is hoping it will be approved and is putting a bit of pressure on Apple by putting up a counter on their web page. I have no doubt it will be approved as there are many other web browsers in the App store already besides the default Safari.

Opera claims its browser is up to 6 times faster thanks to their server-side rendering technology, which compresses data before sending it through. I guess this is a welcome new feature as long as optional.

I assume Opera Mini just like Safari won't support Flash.

I wouldn't use Opera Mini, from what I understand they take all your requests and process them on their servers and then return to you the completed website. This was done as a way of getting around Apple's strict guidelines, which require using Safari's rendering engine.

There's something about all the data you enter, passwords, banking info, credit cards, going into one centralized server that feels a bit unsafe to me.

Just my two cents

I'll give that a go, it certainly looks quick. Safari is so laggy it's painful to use.

I have been using Opera mini and mobile for years in my s60 nokia phone. it's a fantastic browser.
italianMike is partially correct about the servers. opera mini makes a request to opera's servers, then they fetch and compress all the images (you can choose quality settings) and they also compress the html. This all then gets served over a fast link from opera servers to your phone.

They use this approach on their mobile and mini browser for all phones, for years, not just the iPhone. So I dont think they took this approach to circumvent safari, but that is what it does :-)

I wouldnt do mobile banking on a phone anyways, so the security (which I am sure is encrypted all the way through the process) is not an issue for me.

That may well be, but it's still well past Safari!
