Is it just me....

Or has there been a mass influx of utter crap in the critique section recently?
I can't keep up with it all and most of it doesn't even warrant commenting on.
i gave up in here for a
i gave up in here for a while as there wasn't much going on.
then i heard cb had been sold and almost over night the awful ads and crap posts started to appear.
if you need a proper designer forum take a look at http://thedesignerforum.com
Cheers for the link. Looks
Cheers for the link.
Looks good.
I still think CB is. . .
. . .worth the support, that link you sent doesnt look like a very USABLE website though. . . looks like digg to me!
But I do agree with your sentiments: Eventually when something gets too big it becomes not as a cool place to hang out anymore. :(

Yeah, it seems like there's
Yeah, it seems like there's been a bunch of random crap about stupid shit lately. And people with "real" clients/valid projects are being pushed back till no one crits anymore..tsk tsk
life is great; without it, you'd be dead.
I'm reminded of the line,
I'm reminded of the line, "Nobody goes there anymore -- it's too crowded!"
I'm one of those who prefer not to hear a single other whimper from twelve-year-olds getting their pre-pubescent jollies out of ginning up posters about the wages of various sins. I'm also one who's been guilty of treating these visitors to the Critique page as if they were really seeking advice from fellow professionals. Perhaps the best way to handle these kinds of requests for feedback is to withhold same, on the theory that if you don't build it, they won't come.
Ireid, what does "digg" mean? Sometimes I feel soooooo post-pubescent.

digg.com
Is a news aggregation site, and don't worry I only learned about it a couple of months ago! lol

You can 'digg' articles to
You can 'digg' articles to the digg site which means you are casting your vote for that article. Other digg readers can vote for your article and the most popular ones end up on the front page. Kind of interesting what gets voted to the top of the list:

Look for 'digg this article' links the next time you're on a website.

I can start censoring stuff
I can start censoring stuff if you feel it's a good idea...
I'm already deleting all the myspace like mug shots. :)
Censoring...
Would it be possible to break the critiques into groups... I agree with the above post that you submit something and it is pushed down the list by more level 1 posts, however I remember that even as an early design student, it's nice to have someone to critique your work, even if it is crap. You learn from that... I agree with both POV, hence the ability to break it up into categories? Just a thought...

Part of the problem is things are getting pushed back...
The section is moving way too fast.
I know that a few months back sometimes the same few would stay up for weeks at a time, nowadays you're lucky if something saty on the first page for a few days.
Any further with making the critique section show more than 6 items per page?
That would help a bit but it's not a solution...
I don't know what the answer is to be honest, new users should be able to submit thing even if 'we' deem them not to be worth it (sorry if that sounds arrogant), but there often isn't much to critique...
Perhaps make some of the fields compulsory before the form will submit to encourage people to explain what the design is for so people can give useful feedback. A major gripe of mine is when you get an abstract design with no idea of what it's about.
Other than that I'm out of ideas.
Censoring is bad. . .
in any form. HOWEVER maybe you could put in a disclaimer? OR you could put in that 'type in the code box' thing to screen spam?
Just an idea.

being a graphic design Student...
I would hope one would want to be critiqued by others in the field. As i am only going into my second year of school i have nothing to show but i like to mingle and see what is going on. I also want to say that i didnt know what digg.com was either. Maybe when i do produce something worth something at Pratt I might show you. maybe.
I think my point here is illustrated perfectly by the fact...
...of the designs in the Critique 12 hours ago, only one remains on the first page.
Now I don't know about the rest of you but I don't often click to page two of the critique and as such things are getting missed.
This thread may sound like one big whinge but the point is that not only is it annoying to us due to the poor standard of submissions and no guidance as to their purpose or context, it's also not helping the people who are submitting thefore work as it's moving too fast and getting buried before they get any real criticism.
I think part of the solution
I think part of the solution is to have more than 6 crits on one page. We can do that.
That would be a really good
That would be a really good starting point. How about even on the "create critique" page there could be some ideas of things they can tell us. New users, especially students, may not be used to talking about what they are working on.
What is this (poster, business card, logo, digital art, blah blah)? What did the customer provide you with?
I don't know. Maybe not let them "submit" a post until the description section is filled out (not sure if that is already like it)?
Yes, that's a good idea.
Yes, that's a good idea. Will implement.
I just said that up
I just said that up there^^
;o)
You lost me at compulsory...
You lost me at compulsory... maybe that happened to Ivan too? LOL.. sorry.
Rather than cumpulsory
Rather than cumpulsory fields, you could just have a FAQ a the head of the post section.

Well....
Crap is in the eye of the beholder ;-)

New feature
I know this might be a lot but...
How about giving us the option to label submissions as spam so that when a lot of us agree that something is spam it would be dropped or moved from the front page.
I like your thinking...
It got me thinking perhaps a five star rating system would be useful?
Something like in iTunes so we can rate the designs?
Again, that's long term..
Yes
This is a good idea.
Perhaps, there's a way we
Perhaps, there's a way we could prevent new users from being immediate. In other words, if there was somehow a 24-hour delay before they were able to post, the people who are trying to emulate MySpace, might look elsewhere out of lack of patience.
Just a thought....
