Is new always better?
larusson (713 pencils) | Fri, 2005-04-01 15:52I'm not so much asking your oppinion (though it's always fun to hear it), but recently here in Iceland, they re-drew our countrys logo ... shield ... what you call it. I've posted a picture of the new and old here below (new one is on the left and old on the right).
This got me thinking... there really are to many logos being re-drawn lately I think. Ok, some realy need it... but sometimes I think they are doing it just because... maybe as a publisity stunt ... and not nearly all the time for the better.
Just a little ranting going on ... but do you have a oppinion on the subject?

Here is alsa a link to the picture, only bigger:

thanks for posting this! it's extremely interesting. i love seeing logo evolutions.
if this logo was a beer brand or other commercial product, i would say it's was a good idea to improve it. the old man looks stronger and more focused. the bull is more vicious. the bird and dragon are cleaner. the whole thing works better in small sizes. very good job.
however this is country's shield. i don't know if this is appropriate. if it was a drastic change to turn around the meaning of the shield to reflect the modern values of Iceland i would say it's a good idea, but just a simple facelift, i don't know. i guess it was still worth it.
this kind of thing always happens in professonal sports some teams completely redesign their logos while others (NFL's Arizona Cardinals) modify essentially the same logo. I think its just a matter of cheesy marketing...that works. While we do not agree with simply modifying a logo as designers (myself as well as others), it DOES sell more merchandise. Then after a few years the old "retro" logo makes a comeback and people buy more merchandise.
Another logo with a recent refresh is UPS, gone is Paul Rand's package with bow, replaced by a swoosh kind of thing.
I guess it all come down to keeping the product fresh and changing with the times, which, if the logo is good enough doesn't need it, but of course the marketing heads rule in this matter.
I could go on and on.

The shield picture does comes out much better in the new version with thinner strokes.. You can see the details and add more details to it..
Good improvement I think!
I was suprised that the 76 stations changed their logo. The orange had been thier color for years, we had one of their antenna balls on our car when I was young. It's not because I don't like the look of the new color (which I don't), but the fact that they have given up the brand recognition that they built up for decades.

personally, I don't care very much for the change. they needed to make a redrawn version of it, but they've "cleaned" it up a bit to much for my taste. things like fixing the broken horn on the bull was not neccisary I think.
but what really bugs me about the new version is the color version of it... see in the link below... it got too cartoonish for me.
like ivan said, this is not a beer-brand, it's a countries shield!! it should be treated with respect! (this said, i would like to add that I have no doubt the the artists who re-drew it had the upmost respect for this project, we most likely just have different views on it :) )

the colored version - not like. didn't notice the broken horn. that should've been kept. that adds character to the bull.
