...it could be worse.

This are "greeting cards".
The cover has a die cut from which you can see only the head (until the collar of the shirt) of the little girl, crying.
I am debating over whether or not to hand draw the type.
What do you think?

...it could be worse.

I'm sorry, but to show a little girl that is a double amputee for the sake of a few laughs is a big mistake, IMO. I see your intentions but I would say that a good 90% of your audience would find this offensive and the other 10% may get a laugh out of it. I think you could find many more visual options to fit this tagline that are appropriate to the majority. If you put this in your portfolio, you risk offending the wrong person and sabotaging your future.

Wrong - As a greeting card.
Right - As a fund raiser for some NPO working with amputees.

As Kscho says - this is not going to do your career any good as a greeting card.

Agree with the above comments that it's absolutely tasteless. No offense, but there is something else you could do that would be a lot funnier without offending anybody.

Like maybe an elephant sitting on a mouse with the mouse sticking its head out underneath....???? I don't know. Something cheesy like that.

I would take this and start all over.

Thank you for the comments.

"Something cheesy like that"?
Why would I?

I must have a sick sense of humour cause I found this cute. I would use it as a greeting card but ONLY for people I knew had the same sense of humour. Sending it to clients? No way.

Definitely hand draw the type.

My first reaction was that of "Oh my god, what a horrid image". Then my second reaction was a little giggle.

I agree it is wrong and in bad taste, however, if you are going to produce it, do some hand drawn type.

A good source I've found for free hand drawn type is:

Yeah, I don't find this so unacceptably offensive. I think that's mostly knee-jerk and piously humorless. WIth no context, it's a little jarring, but I don't understand how people can claim this is wrong for your audience when they don't know who your audience is. "As a fund raiser for some NPO working with amputees." Seriously? That's inappropriate.

In general, outside of any unreasonable fear that someone who REALLY has two arms amputated and a shoe untied will notice I've drawn something they identify with in a less than serious way, I find it funny. Just looking at it, I find it funny. I find it funny in an "Omigod that's horrible", way." I would laugh, and show my fiance, and she would laugh and crinkle her nose up, as if to say, "So wrong. I love you, but you're so broken."

This is not a good portfolio piece, unless your prospective employer is something like Ledger's (RIP) Joker, all ethically Lacanian and sardonic as hell, or unless the employer does something awful like clubbing seals or shooting puppies. I agree you should hand draw the type.

Does this say something like, "Don't cry..." on the front?

it's tacky, but it may be appropriate for the right audience.

agreed, the idea of hand drawn type is a good one.

is the texture in the BG from the paper or something? if it's just a scan artifact, that's fine. if it's not, it's distracting to me.

There's a fine line between tragedy and comedy. In this case you've crossed it and not on the funny side.

Definitely hand drawn text. I would also make it the same texture, shape and colour as that of the shoelace--it would tie the whole design together. And if expense is not an issue, force the recipient to open this card by untying a tied-up lace.

I absolutely agree that this calls for hand drawn type. What I have right now is actually hand drawn but it simulates a font. I think plain handwriting will be much better. And tying that to the shoelace, which I believe is getting less attention than it deserves, will definitely help the overall design. Thank you very much.
I will also try tying the card with a lace.
Excellent ideas. Thank you very much.

I think its fantastic for the right audience - just dont send it to a children's hospital..

The image is so provoking that i dont think the font really matters that much.

I also think the hole in the cover is a little cheap. This image works on its own with no need to add the complication of cutting holes in stuff. Whats the message on the front anyway..?

I vote just put the above image straight on the cover. Then "Get Well Soon" or whatever inside.
