It's Official!

Just announced by Steve himself - Apple to switch to Intel processors by 2007.

After demoing a slew of features in Tiger and announcing that the next version of OSX will be called Leopard, Steve showed the crowd that all the demo's were being run on a Intel P4.

"Every release of Mac OS X has been built for both Intel and PowerPC-based Macs. For the last 5 years Mac OS X has been cross-platform by design."

... can't ... breathe ....

Well it seems that he's at least making it as painless as possible, as we expected. But it looks like we're back to "fat binaries" again!

First of all.. Apple is plainly stupid and shot themself in the foot by announcing it now..

Who wants to buy a ppc mac now? 2 more years until Intel macs starts to show up on the shelfs at Apple Store..

Remember all those times Apple has thrown dirt on Intel and that megahertz myth.. Was all that a simple lie?

What is gonna happen to all our PPC machines atm? drop in value? And don't forget, the new intel machines is gonna have DRM built in..

2 years is a long time. I know my father will be buying a new PowerBook in the next few days. When people need a computer they often get it, and when dealing with PC converts, many will probably be unaware of future Intel chips in Macs.

Those of us who follow Apple in such detail - mac heads - we are a small number and must remember this. Most people won't know or care.

PPC Macs may lose some value as time goes on, but many major developers have pledged to continue with PPC support. Apple's new Xcode all delivers a single binary for PPC and Intel.

Apple's 'dirt on Intel' at the time was fairly true but over the years it has been harder for Apple to support, as your Joe average consumer just looked at raw numbers.

It's true, most of the people I know using Macs didn't even notice when Apple switched processors the last time to PPC. They may not notice it this time either. Honestly I don't give a ... what is inside my Mac as long as it's cool and serves me well. I'd like to rely on Apple knowing what's best for my user experience. They never fail to deliver. It's not perfect, but still way ahead of competition.

Well... yesterday I was just dying to get a 17" PB... today... I'm not so sure... I'll have to watch and see what happens. If I can get a toshiba or sony for less then a PB and put OSX on it then Apple will have a hard time getting me to buy a Mac... except they're sooooooo beautiful....

It will be interesting to see how Apple plans to keep OS X on Apple machines. And then it will be interesting to see how that DRM gets bypassed or broken. How long before someone figures out how to get Leopard running on a Dell?

I think this is a political step to convince Apple's position in the market. Let's see how the stock market will react? I suspect they will need a torreador to tame the bull. :)

I wonder if there is something also brewing with HP and Apple? With the news of Intel do you think HP will be running only OS X?!!?!? That would be awsome since i have a newer HP...oh wait it has a AMD in it...ARHHH!!!!!

I took an hour and watched the keynote speech this morning. I'm now a bit more relaxed about the transition. It eased my mind a bit to hear about the "double life" that OS X has lead up to this point.

I'm actually looking forward to the beefier processing power.

Very interesting read:
http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2436

I'm not an Apple user, yes, I'm PC baby. And I allow myself
to say that IN MY OPINION, the G5 promised alot, and didn't
deliver. I've been using the G5 off and on the past few months,
using Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop CS, and I was disapointed.
This is based also on a friend's experience, who uses Macs and
PCs for audio engineering.

G5 didn't live up to the expectations.
You can be a hardheaded Apple devotee,
or you can just admit it.

Not hardheaded, the G5 rocks.

I'll quote someone who summarized the article I posted in my previous comment here:

Mac OS X is incredibly slow, between 2 and 5(!) times slower, in creating new threads, as it doesn't use kernel threads, and has to go through extra layers (wrappers). No need to continue our search: the G5 might not be the fastest integer CPU on earth - its database performance is completely crippled by an asthmatic operating system that needs up to 5 times more time to handle and create threads. The server performance of the Apple platform is catastrophic.

So is the Mac NOT about performance, but about interface?
I won't start a war here, (or maybe I will :)), but a great interface, can't
take away from the performance, and did Tiger help at all? I think it made
things worse.

Is this a good decision from Apple? I think so. It could be better if
they decided on AMD, but, Intel is as good.

Ivan's picture

Are you saying that the problem is OS X, right? Will Intel solve it?

I think that article is focusing on a few things that in overall doesn't affect the user experience or performance much. OS X is still the best OS around, is it not? I'm ready to change if you can show me a better one.
