Jim D's secret Quark fixation

Anyone notice that his user icon, seems to look a fair bit like the new Quark identity?

Boy did Quark muff that launch. Announced by an "acting" president no less.

Jim's logo:

Quark:

Well, I don't think he has much feelings for Quark. If any it would not be love for sure. ;)

It's interesting that his logo reminded you of Quark. This proves that simply colors and shapes already make a memory recall. I don't think they look close, but even if they did - Jim had it much earlier.

I actually really like both logos. CG needs some work on the typo, but the symbol is great! The Quark logo is sweet too. I really like it. And the shape is in nowadays. I think we can find at least 2-3 logos using curved vs square corner logos in the Critique section just on this site.

I, like most of us here, understand how important a well-designed product and identity is... but Quark's new clothes aren't impressing me yet. I'll save my excitement for when (if) I discover QuarkXPress 7 to be a significant improvement over QuarkXPress 6.5. I'm not really expecting much though... not with Quark's track record.

That said... it is a nice logo. I'm curious to see how it looks on the dock (anything's better than the lotus with the illegible "QUARK" badge in the corner!) It *is* a bit like Quicktime, but I'll forgive that since it's my favorite color. :-P

As Ivan said, I had the logo first! ;-) And he is also correct that I have no love for Quark. I'm Adobe red and black through & through.

I don't see the similarity at all though. I don't necessarily think their new logo is ugly, but it'll take some time to get used to it.

My logo was meant to not only be the initials of CreativeGuy, but also a close relation to the Infinite Loop, which also happens to be the address of our favorite computer maker.

I'm not overly happy with the black text in my logo, but I've been at a loss as to what to do with it. I actually have a pretty big update to my site waiting to go live, but I'm waiting on myself to come up with a solution.

Anyone have any ideas I'm happy to hear them!

I had just noticed a few of your dressings down of the Q and it collided with the release of their super-hyper-mega press release for the rebrand.

Well you do have a green circle thingy ;-)

Still limping along on Quark 6.1, just too crazy busy all the time. Need a year off to retrain on CS and InDesign!

Not sure how many have seen this yet, but Quark's new logo looks, if you squint hard enough, and look at it sideways, a tiny bit like this, the logo for the Scottish Arts Council. Hmmm.

I think that looks way too similar. Good find. I think I've seen this shape used for a logo for another probably print company as well. Can't remember the name though.

Wish they posted the logo in the Critique section before presenting to client. The beauty of an international community giving you feedback is that you get so many different perspectives. There is no way you can spot all potential issues yourself. However I realize that is a no option, because that would expose the plans for a new identity too early.

Oooh, it looks just like the logo for the SAC - except a different color. Egads! Figures, though - Quark is awful.

I really hate the font Quark uses as well... for some reason, it reminds me of a "default" font you would have found on a computer in 1992. I dunno...

Whoa, that's scary.

I guess it only shows how much care should be taken when designing something. The last think you want is a nasty coincidence like with what's happening with Quark at the moment.

The Scottish logo is being discussed on the Quark forums, wonder if Quark will act or just bury their head in the sand as usual. I would at least expect a statement soon.

Correct me if i am wrong but there is only 3 fonts used in graphical parts of the site and the they seem to use Trebuchet for Headings and Arial for body copy.

I don't see this as bad practice myself. I am a believer in separating fonts used in logos with those used in the rest of the brand specifications. Personally I think that using one font for all purposes weakens the word-mark element of the logo.

Anyone agree disagree?

I agree. It's best to keep the logotype special.
