Job Market Status
cadaniel (17 pencils) | Sat, 2008-02-09 20:35I'm curious to know how well the job market is doing for those of you searching for full time employment.
I live in Indianapolis, IN which is not a city known for it's design culture, however there are a handful of good shops here.
I've been searching for about 5 months now with little success.
What have your experiences been?

Great job aggregating site.
San Diego, for example, has lots of web design jobs. I think usually the farther inland you go the fewer design jobs there are. It's just doesn't seem to be as highly valued unless you're on a coast (Ie. NY or Los Angeles)

It probably depends a lot on what kind of job and how much experience you have, plus contacts.
We're hiring now in southern Indiana and got a billion resumes. I know several who've just found different careers all together. One dude moved to California, supposedly.
I think too many people are going into this field, so it's making us less in demand and thus less valuable.. blah blah.. like 50 graduate each year from just one of the 4 colleges in my city.
Agreed. There's a GLUT of new web designers out there; most want to 'work from home' and be their own bosses but don't understand what that really entails. Your schedule isn't 100% your own when you're freelance and you work a lot. No paid vacations.
That's why I became a web designer. :)

Might want to give this site a try as well. I've managed to snag a bit of work from here in the past. When I have time, I plan to delve more into it. You never know, you could find a shop that's hiring near your location.
