LED sign company logo... my turn on the chopping block.
wgzn (1711 pencils) | Wed, 2010-10-13 05:11i'm working on a logo redesign project for an LED sign company.
their existing logo is a typical, in-house-produced, word-art quality piece of dog poo.
they're looking for something a bit more sophisticated.
i thought the figure/ground relationship in the attached attempt was kind of interesting.
i wonder though if it isn't a bit hard to grasp...
thoughts?

It was a little hard to initially see LED in the reverse. This type of treatment works in illustration/OP art, but for a logo I feel it needs to be more immediate...especially for a sign company.
I think you're on the right track with using the LED look, but it needs to be presented in a more clear format and perhaps reworked as it could be mistaken for braille as well.
"leading edge display" 's font works, but I'd worry about losing it when reduced.
Nice start.

P.S. And if you need to get the mojo going, try implementing a PV grid. ;)

It could be read as a Braile something.
I think better and lighter without the first and last columns.
You used wrong typo, even it's related to tech market, the name could be Caps to make it more easy to understand for global audience and use a bit more stylish one.
yes I'm brazilian xD
I think it's going to be hit or miss. Some people are going to get it and think "Hey, that's pretty cool" and some people are going to think Braille.
I like the concept of it. It needs to be "dumbed" down to reach a larger audience.

I'm going to print it out and eat it.

yeah. i thought about dumbing it down. and it pretty well solves the braille thing. but it also largely destroys what made the effort interesting in the first place.
i think im kinda where caoimghgin was with his "next" car logo a couple days ago. im so drunk on one cool aspect that it wants to eclipse the negative aspects...
Did you try smaller dots, and just more of them?
Granted, when shrunk you won't get the LED concept. I think it's worth a few more sketches with this idea before trying something else...

the last try is heavy

Agree with qwertyale. The idea is smart, but the execution's not quite there yet.

i did consider smaller dots, yeah. but this is a b2b client and GOLF is a frequent sales tool. so i have to keep "embroiderability" in mind...
qwerty, when you say "heavy" do you mean:
- heavy-handed / clumsy
or
- "heavy" as in 1970's-speak for "cool"
The top set is more interesting graphically - as a piece of art I like it - but neither set reads well enough to pass as a logo imho. Took me forever to see the D.
Keep working on it.
well. the client doesnt get it. so its a dead issue anyway. grrrr!
i guess it goes onto the website as a case study.
i think it was easier for me to read in thumbnail form than in large form. i'm not sure what that means, but the D was much harder to see when i saw the full size image.
i'm in agreement with the concept of trying more/smaller dots. maybe you need to look into the embroider thing to see how small the dots can reasonably be at the size it would be embroidered .
That D is tripping me out, one minute it's fine, the next it's reversed (on the header image). I love the tension that creates, but I'm not sure how you could explain that to the client.
It almost fickers

Haha, That is a horrible design a speical since you can't even read the logo. It looks like a blob.
