LED sign company logo... second pass
wgzn (1711 pencils) | Mon, 2010-10-18 05:19well. the client vetoed the previous "dot matrix" version.
he asked me, "can you design me something that doesnt take a college degree to understand?"
so. this is what i've come up with.
thoughts?

Hate tagline font and placement.
they will often use the logo on the edge of their signs. so im trying something with a wide and short aspect ratio
Sure, but not as the 'hero' mark.
Anyway, you'll want to move the type to the right, away from the mark. The negative space should match the spaces you have between the words.
Why so much wide kearning? It's not unpleasent, just wondering.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
"Why so much wide kearning?"
just a phase im going through. i like the air...
cool

Gotta love clients like that...
This logo is legible now, but I think your client might be looking for something a little more flashy due to the nature of their business. I would try something along these lines:
http://www.signdesignclonmel.com/leds.htm
but more logo-y.
or: http://www.capitalwindow.com/showcase.htm -- the LED green power is different but says LED
or playing off your original idea, but utilizing encased shapes: http://www.tradeindia.com/TradeShows/fairs/ledexpo-2009.html
or just a play on the RGB aspect: http://www.ledimages.com/ledimages/ledvideowall.htm
"Art -- the one achievement of Man which has made the long trip up from all fours seem well advised." - James Thurber
Easier to read, but full of text. Maybe try stacking the text? I would play with the word "edge" also.
JW, can you elaborate on:
"I would play with the word "edge" also."
not sure what you mean?
i dunno about "stacking the text"
that typically comes off as kinds horsey unless you can do it in a very sparse or very congested style. neither of which i think would work with this mark - or this client...
i tried it with the existing type and it did indeed look horsey.
but maybe i'll play with other fonts for the name part...
anders. the font is arum sans. and trust me - you WILL see more of it. i secretly take credit for the rebirth of frutiger about a decade ago. heed my words. arum is on its way my friend ; )
3dog, yeah im with you. but the one thing the client seemed to un-dig was the whole dot thing. here is one i presented to them. they like it. i dont HATE it. but i dont LOVE it either...
and for whatever reason. its showing up horizontally compressed here...?
I actually dont mind this one. Minus the outlines. (hope im not turning into predictable client mode). Would the other one work better all capitals, and a darker shade of grey? There is definetely something to work with here. Im not a big fan either of arum sans either, but then again I thought Happy Pants would be a staple fashion item through the 90's, so maybe im not best to comment on trends...
This is GOOD!
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
The original post leaves a little to be desired, but this here is an acquired taste. I absolutely hated it, then came back to critique it, and found it making a little more sense. I waited, and now that I look at it, I actually kind of like it. It has a weird shape, the outline definitely has to go, but it is a good solid logo. It grows on you. it might not have that wow factor, but it's potential for longevity is there.

thanks el! i actually hadnt tried this one as solid lines... but i WILL!
the problem i have with this approach is at some point the LED metaphor becomes NEON.
thats why i LOVED the original version. that it relied on the same optical "closure" that the general LED technology does.
the other one doesnt work well as all caps because the big negative space between the cap L and back of the E. maybe if it was inverted as cap L and D and lowercase e...
good thoughts guys! keep'em coming.
im not sure about this crowd-sourcing thing as a methodology. but im having fun!
great point on the LED turning NEON. I need to do more research on LED's before commenting! ha. Bugger they didnt like your orignal one. Oh well, it always seems to work out in the end.
we'll figure it out.
keep shouting folks!
all comments welcomed... but be ready to defend your point ; )
The second one is a lot more interesting imo. The top one is not memorable and I never like to mix the upper and lower case like that. Let's see #2 without the outlines.
ok. here it is without the outline, new fonts and a couple other treatment variations as well...
slice and dice!
Great work mate. Bottom 2 are no go for me, but I too love the other ones. Great to see the dots back again as well!!
Like monkey1979 me too liked the 2nd 1 of the latest update. But if possible can play with the 'LED' graphics like...
Thanks!

I'm in love with the middle right option, but I think the second one will be the popular choice here. This turned out way better than expected.

thanks guys! now its up to the client...
I love the first and second of your latest update, for me though it is a bit heavy, very creative linkage of letters. I played with it, hope you don't mind.
living on dreams and custard creams.
yeah. i had thought about going lighter.
personally, i liked it. but didnt know if the client would...
Like all of them except the top one. Maybe lose just a hair on the font weight for #2 - but these are all very presentable imho - excellent work.
last logo with #2 tagline
change this "health care" blue.
use red and green versions too.
a bit more space for "d"
yes I'm brazilian xD
place changed... look up
Thanks!

I like the one you feared was too neon. I have a bit of hard time reading the E since it is three colors and other letters are one. Seems like you are hanging onto the 3 color E from the previous iteration. This may be a bit more "neony" but I would be curious to see a gradient from the green and red to blue to create a blue E in the middle. Each letter would then represent one color in the red green blue spectrum. Or maybe just try breaking the E a part. Seems like the concept here is that each letter should be a color, and the three colors should be in better balance. The blue is minimal compared to the red and green.
im an old-school logo purist. NO GRADIENTS in a mark.
