Leopard first impressions - Hands on with the feature complete beta
plugz (1244 pencils) | Fri, 2007-06-29 19:15One of my friends was at the WWDC and the lucky blighter has a copy of Mac OS X 10.5 codenamed Leopard (no matter how much I begged he wasn't making me a copy), and he brought his MacBook round today and I got to stroke the big bad cat for myself.
Right, first of all even if you were a little underwhelmed by the WWDC announcements and keynote you will like Leopard.
I've spent just over two hours with it today and it's an awesome system (I'm typing this on Leopard now in my last few moments with it).
People concerned about the new menu bar have nothing to worry about, it's actually much less distracting than the old one.
The new dock is nice, and again it's not as obtrusive as I thought it would be, although it is easier to accidentally drag applications off the dock.
Features>
1) Time Machine...
This is AWESOME, I didn't realise just how powerful it was until I tried it out. I hooked my friends system up to my hub with all my drives on and my MacBook in target disk mode and time machine detected my disks and I could choose whether or not to add them to the back up.
The UI is so simple it's scary and I tried many times to trash, empty trash & restore various items and it caught it all.
2) Spaces...
Great idea although I'd have liked to see it integrated a little better with dual screen set-ups so that I could keep various items on each screen as a space of it's own rather than each space including both screens, but that's not a big deal.
3) Finder...
I was sceptical about the new finder but it was needless, the new Finder is rock solid and very, very easy to use with other computers on your network.
This is a huge improvement, I was one of the few who didn't have a problem with the Finder, but after seeing this I'm glad Apple finally did FTFF.
4) Stacks...
Brilliant. Just brilliant. Again another incredibly intuitive UI addition that makes things so much simpler and easier in such a nice way. I dragged a few folders on to the dock and they instantly became stacks that pop open and close with a single click.
The downloads Stack is particularly useful and very impressive.
5) Spelling...
Now with grammar check too!
It's a little ropey still but it's not too bad and a nice addition to keep up with the competition.
6) Compatibility...
I was worried about small apps and things like my tablet software not working but I installed it and it was fine, better than fine in fact it just worked.
The only issue during installation was that System Preferences crashed I assume as it was adding the Wacom preference pane, but it did no harm to the system.
7) Quick Look...
Useful if you're wading through pictures and video and can't be bothered to open every one to find the one you're after. It's a nice feature, it's not a killer app, but it's a welcome addition to the OS.
8) Mail...
Most importantly in my opinion, the mail account setup is now far better.
One of the biggest complaints I had about Mail was the way it handled setting up new accounts, this has been smoothed over now and made more intuitive.
The set-up aside, the Mail.app is a very nice improvement over the old version. Notes and To Do I can see being very useful to me too as I always have Mail open and it could be more convenient than Stickies for me.
9) Address Book...
Not a major App but one I want to like more than I do, this version is nicer, it's not a lot different but the small changes and interface lift make it all that bit easier to use and more enjoyable to spend time with.
10) Candy for the eyes and the ears...
Right, the last bit and the most important for me. Leopard is way nicer to spend time with, the small changes such as new screen savers, desktop backgrounds, dock, menu bar, icons, the system wide UI etc. make it a pleasure to use.
Accessibility is better as well if you're partially sighted as there is a new more human voice in the speech section that is actually quite pleasant to listen to.
The new Dashboard feature where you can hit a button in Safari, drag over a section of a web page and make your own widget is pretty damn cool too and yet another killer dashboard app.
In Closing...
Leopard does need a polish still, it's a little buggy so I wouldn't be comfortable installing it on my machine just yet, but by the time it hits the shops less than 4 months time it'll be a great system and a joy to use, the speed of the system even now is quite stunning.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 hours with it today and almost didn't want to give it back, but I settled for stealing the new desktop backgrounds instead to remind me it's coming. ;o)
I for one can't wait for it to be released.

. . . review plugz! So do you think it will increase productivity?
I was concerned about Time Machine. . . like HOW it was going to DO this wonderful back up thing. . . I am still wondering what happens if my HD dies and I have to restore to a new one, how does Time Machine work with that?

When installing 10.5, you have the option to restore from a Time Machine volume. Assuming you have the firewire drive connected to the machine you want restored, you will be able to restore from any time machine volume.
From what I've seen, Time Machine is very powerful and will basicaly mirror your system on a drive that you can restore at any time akin to the migration assistant utility in Tiger but obviously far more powerful.
Leopard I think will increase productivity a lot due to the small refinements of the OS, it's a very good update.

It's great to read an unbiased hands on review. Sounds like a pleasant new release.
I added a screenshot of Leopard to your post from the Apple PR site. Hope you don't mind!
I dont mind at all.

Sounds like I got my 2-gig RAM upgrade in the nick of time (though only on a G5 PowerMac, not the latest Intel one). Apple makes SUCH good candy, dunnit?

Thanks for the review, plugz.
Did you get a chance to look around iCal? I'm very eager to see if they've improved it enough that I can use it instead of Google Calendar.
I'd really like to be able to run my calendars from a central server (preferably my own) without it having to be a webDAV. I'd like to be able to access and edit from anywhere.

I'll see if I can get to have another look round Leopard more this week and report back. about the other bits and pieces.

Is it just me who is weirded out by "stacks" and how they pop out sort of whimsically angled? It's kind of jack-in-the-boxy and I'm not sure how useful that is or if I'm going to like it.
The fact it stacks only pop out like that until there are too many items in that stack to fit in the 'jack-in-the-box' style string, after that they pop up in a transparent black window, which based on the size of the folders I added to stacks will be more common.
I don't think it's a usability issue at all, it's nothing more than eye candy really but again it's a small thing that adds to the 'lickability' of the OS.

Does anybody know the minimum system requirements for Leopard, yet?
It looks really cool and I cannot wait to upgrade—if my machine is compatible, of course. *Sigh*
Have they added new desktop images yet? I am so sick & bored with "nature", "black & white", "abstract" and "Apple images." God, something new, please!!!! :-D

the minimum requirements will be in the region of a G4 processor (possibly rated at 867Mhz or above) and 512Mb RAM with at least 6GB available space on your hard drive.
I'd expect G3 support to be dropped now, although some of the last G3 iBooks were only discontinued about 4 years ago, supporting four different hardware revisions I think would be unnecessary and unlikely.
The fact that Apple are looking to drive the uptake to Intel and the new user experience will add to the reasons for losing the G3s, several features of the graphics acceleration and core animation which are a large part of Leopard wouldn't be accessible to G3 users, as such I don't believe it makes sense for them to support what will effectively be incompatible hardware.
There are some new desktop images too. ;o)

I appreciate all of that. One of these days, I will be able to afford to upgrade to a new system. Until then, I'm stuck with what I have. OH well.
Any donations would be much appreciated. ;-D

If you want to buy a 1st revision piece of crap that has already died twice...
On the plus side, it's now got almost entirely new innards.
[Disclaimer - Don't buy it, I couldn't in good faith sell it to anyone I know without feeling incredibly guilty and having a large portion of Karma come and bite me in the ass - Thank Vishnu for eBay]

I was more in the market for a desktop with at least a 20" display. We shall see.

I was lucky and landed a big contract so I've thrown all the earnings at new hardware for the future to let me work smarter and faster.
Well, that's the excuse I'm using for spending a few thousand on shiny new toys.

Which nowadays, is huge!!! Kudos to you! =P

However, I wish I could take credit for the design, but I cannot. The designer/illustrator is one of my favorite painters/illustrators—Josh Agle (a.k.a. SHAG). He has these free icon downloads on his website and I thought it would be better than what I was using.
Thanks for noticing, ireid.=P

You know you can use any raster image for your desktop, right? Just be sure the proportions work with your monitor. Why not design your own? :-)
Mara
I do incorporate my own. But I have always loved Apple's designs, even though they're getting tiresome.
Thanks for your concern, Mara. Have a happy 4th. =P
