Logo - African charity org

My friend and I are designing a logo pro bono for a charity organization that is just getting off the ground. The organization works with former street children to prepare them for adulthood and teach them job and life skills. Their original logo can be seen here: http://www.offthestreetkids.org.

After an initial round of designs the client settled on this one. We like it very much but we are trying to figure out if it needs more -- like should part or all of it be in color? Also, how to choose the right typeface and how to integrate the type more into the overall design? We are new to logo design so we could use some tips.

Thanks very much for your help.

i really like that! i would say that u need to put any color into it but maybe work the type into the design more. to me, the text seems a bit too wide compared to the actual logo. but the logo is sweet, i wouldn't touch it :)

yup, i agree that there's a disconnect between the type and the logomark. you need to find a better spacial relationship. it just looks like it's dropped in there and centered and they really need to feel like integrated elements.

i do like the logomark very much, tho.

As above, LOVE the mark.

Font, as stated by you, you're struggling with.
If it were me, I'd try it tucked up and into the left of the graphic, in the South Atlantic Ocean. For fonts, I'd try both Urbana and Franklin Heavy. Both will most likely not be a final choice, but may steer you towards a font "style".

For colour, does your budget allow for 3-ink usage? If so, I'd give the primary palette a go here.

Have fun.
Great work so far!

Thank you for the encouragement and the suggestions. I'll try some different fonts and try to place them in that space to the left.

Thanks for the suggestions on the heavier font styles. I think they go better with the substantialness of the mark.

What do you think of this:

Pencils, I really admire you and your friend doing that for Bono's charity works. I'm also a fan of One because he is a very good person. It's kinda inspiring to hear that he has also been active in helping Haiti victims, and that he had been relentless in requiring oil companies to report any payments to government officials, which particularly hurts people in poor countries.

Bono had been an advocate in such programs and policies, ensuring world leaders keep their commitments. I know of certain local and international artists that gains recognition too in similar acts of benevolence like charity holiday greeting cards in which they receive royalty when people choose their cards.

Talking about your design, I really think it's cool. I like the black part that is shaped to give the illusion of an african boy facing sideways.
