Logo: breakin' rules
sykobihari (52 pencils) | Thu, 2005-10-06 09:21Hi Creativebitians,
here is a logo design / identity piece i just finished. its for my personal website, the idea for which has been in the incubator for several years. i basically envision doing design work with a constructivist feel and wanted my logo to be anti-establishement to certain extent... "mantralay" is hindi word meaning "the ministry" and the building depicted to be on-fire is the infamous Reichstag.

Definitely not your 'traditional' logo design. How do you think this will hold up when scaled, my guess is not so well.

I would be surprised if the logo works well as a logo as photos do not usually work.. perhaps have a single orange outline of the top of the building instead, so people know its that building but without having the photo?
Also the mantralay font choice really lets down the piece.
Sorry to be harsh, just saying what I think :)

I think it's ok to do something not traditional, but there are too many layers in this logo. There is no way antone will understand it or appreciate it without an explanation.
You could do the reichstag on fire effect much better I believe.
Also, I don't know if it's a good idea to burn a ministry at this age of terrorism and such. Unless you do want to create buzz.
Good luck!
Looks like a torn piece of paper or something. The Radiating gray lines are too thin and unnecessary IMO.
The type, I kinda dig the typeface that "Mantralay" is in, but the "ministry of propaganda" typeface is a big let down. Maybe a distressed script typeface would work....maybe a font called Chato Band. Can be found on myfonts.com

This logo has alot of potential and if done right it could look like Williams Street's logo (Adult Swim)
Overall, good idea, not quite there.

First off - I'm a big fan of the art style - sort of like the old www.macgurus.com.
So to start, I'd spend some time looking at some of those old Bolshevik-era propoganda posters. The really cool ones are typically 2 color, simple and feature a strong visual element (like a star or a hammer).
to tweak this logo -here's what i would do:
- bring a larger (cleaner) version of the building into illustrator and trace the edges to create an outlined version of it (jack the contrast way up to get good vectors)
- then put it against a red or burnt orange color and secure it within a strong shape - a box with a thick stroke or something like that.
- put your text below in reverse coloring of the above building (so red on black below black on red) - this should add some boldness to it and will make it play nicely against the building image. I like your block font - keep that one but maybe tweak the mid lines in the "A"s or something -- put them at an angle or something like that.. just to make the font yours.
Just to kick it up a notch - I'd give it a worn feel too. - Moll's got a great little piece on it: http://tinyurl.com/35eo9

Aap ko hindi atta hai?
Thanks a bunch guys.. Yeah I knew it was not going to be ideal as an icon... and ll the stuff u guys pointed out was bang on target.
Charlie - I saw the William Street logo and yeah thats pretty similar to what I wanted to do.. didn't know abt the show. As for the fire.. struggled with that for awhile.. any suggestions on how to make it better?
evil evil dracula - Thanks for the suggestion and specially for the idea abt tweaking the font.. i will do something of the sorts most probably...
Jammo - thnx for commenting.. that you took time to make a suggestion is compliment enough. Its great that at a forum like this people can be honest and I feel that such frank communication only facilitates better work.
Kaiyohtee - sup, namaste, yeah i know hindi.. mother toungue. whats your story?
I'll work on this for a bit and post a redone version soon.. Thanks y'all.
i think that you've created something that is more eyecandy than logo...
still cool though, so i'm not totally dissin' it, but the way to get a solid logo is to look at a lot of other solid logos...my recommendation look at chermayoff & geismar's website http://www.cgstudionyc.com/home.html and also Pentagram.
both have trademark/mark/identity areas on their website, and here you'll get an insider's look at some of the best out there.
then....simplify your logo to the most basic graphic you can while keeping a clear message....
look forward to seeing the next version..
