Logo for Caricature Business
vicho friedli (28 pencils) | Tue, 2010-07-27 00:25Hi everybody! I just started this new business in which I print caricatures in various mediums (t-shirts, mugs, mousepads, etc...you name it ;) )
I am an animator/illustrator, but I've been working as a graphic designer for quite a while now. I found this site and decided to give it a shot to design the logo myself following the design process you (and lots of other sites) suggest (brief, benchmarks, sketching, etc...).
The concept I'm aiming for is what every (or most) caricature convey. Funny, laughter, drawing, etc...
I uploaded some ink sketchtes so you can tell me what you think.
I've already written too much, so I won't explain the sketches...(that way I will also know if you see what I intended)
I'm going to put it alongside with the name of the business, which is "caricaturate.com". It's a deformation of "make a caricature of yourself".
Thanks a lot for your comments!!!!

This is fantastic! My God man this is what I've been dying to see on CB for the longest time! Such personality in these sketches, such raw fucking talent! I think I might love you, vicho.
Also, I think they all have potential. Good work!

I'm going to print it out and eat it.

i like the pencil almost at the bottom right (the third from the bottom upwards) the one with the trail, i think it has what you need. excelent job bro!
I like the pencils too.
Nobody will ever remember "caricaturate" however. Tough word to get your head around even when you're reading it from a printed page.
Umm, these sketches are still really raw. If your going to add text you should show it with these drawing so it is a complete idea. All these images still seem a little half-baked.
Which makes them perfect as THUMBNAILS.
This is how logo designing begins, not straight on the computer like most people unfortunately seem to think.

Caricaturate: It's a deformation of "make a caricature of yourself".
Is it really? Well I never. Be aware that deformation is usually associated with making something worse, unless your talking about geology where it becomes neutral.
Just checked out your website. Why not use a modified illustration of the artist on your home page as your logo? – I'm assuming that's a caricature of you. It has potential.
With some work you could develop it to become as iconic as the Colonelski Sandersesque Illustrativus. (Does that count as a deformation of Colonel Sanders or do i have rocks in my head?)
Write a wise saying and your name will live forever – Anonymous.

Deformed geology. Nope. No rocks in your head there.
"Art -- the one achievement of Man which has made the long trip up from all fours seem well advised." - James Thurber
"Umm, these sketches are still really raw"
- yeah, ass-hat. thats why they are called SKETCHES!
"if your (sic) going to add text you should show it with these drawing so it is a complete idea."
- he's not to that point yet
"All these images still seem a little half-baked."
- whatever dude.
Donkdafied, these are some of the most thorough and thought-out sketches weve seen on the forum in quite a while. you clearly have no idea what the hell youre talking about
@wgzn All I am doing is offering my opinion like everyone else (for better or for worse)after all it is a critique forum. I don’t try to discredit people, and I don’t tell people they shouldn’t be designer’s, that's seems to be your job. Your 20 years in the business has made you a douche.
you can offer your opinion all day. but the stuff you said was either plain wrong or at least counter to what the OP said about the state of the piece.
maybe i was a bit harsh. I apologize.
Hey dude nice drawings — I went on your website :).
Your drawings are excellent and I can see raw talent there, but looking further your typography needs work...
— sorry off topic.
As far as a logo goes I think these sketches are looking great! I like your ideas and how you have kept them simple like a logo should be. Except I don't think a pencil, or any of those simple illustrations reflect your talent as an illustrator.
You could use a whole semi-detailed picture of a caricature as your logo if it works out well :)
Just an idea.

@wgzn s'all good man no hard feelings, just chillout a little design gangsta. :)
Wow, thanks everyone for you're comments!
Leaky Penny: Thanks man, I really appreciate your enthusiasm but, love? Well, it's OK with me...be warned that I have a girlfriend though, ahahahahha!!! ;)
NRcreative: I like the pencil too, but isn't it too obvious and too elaborate? I want something more iconic. Something I could put on a t-shirt without the text someday, when the brand is more recognized. Like the Nike logo (well I can dream can't I?)
Anonymous: "assuming that's a caricature of you", it's not me. It's just a character. I might use it as a mascot though.
Caricaturate: It's a deformation of "make a caricature of yourself". - I guess it's hard to explain since it's another language.
Art D. Rector: Yeah, after some time, I have my doubts too. But I hope that in spanish it's not so complicated.
riqsane: "your typography needs work", yes I know. That's why I'm redesigning the whole thing. I'm just starting with a simple, iconic logo. Someone has posted many times on this site (I think it was wgzn) to imagine if the logo would work embroidered. That's what I'm looking for. I've thought about a caricature as logo, but decided to use it as a mascot instead.
These are great, I agree it's nice to see some actual sketches and thumbnails. Cheers to you!

Definitely a great idea. (Mascot Caricature)
You are on the right track with your logo development. The pencil is very well crafted looks beautiful, but it's an obvious path. (your competitors logo's would likely have a pen or drawing instrument).

Yes, you're right...almost every caricature site has either a pencil or a caricature as logo...

I also played around with the idea of a "C" laughing. I was liking it until I found this site...
